Look, you are thinking about Nokia phones (comparing them with Iphone). Maemo devices are different species, more like handheld netbooks.
Look, the Maemo devices are not competing with RIM/Apple mobiles, they are not competing with Nokia mobile phones either (It looks like you are thinking about Nokia mobile phones S60/S40 series).
Well, first of all, Maemo devices are not mobile phones per se. You should of think them as handheld linux computers, at least N800/N810 are closer to netbooks than mobile phones.

See Maemo.org website for more info

For the coming device (N900) see preview runnning on a development hardware (Beagle board):

Well you can always use wi-fi if available or tether it to your mobile (if you have reasonable data charges), same as the previous models (N800/N810). So yes it can be useful in Africa.
N800 / N810

Has built in reader plus other apps like:

Evince

FBReader

Great battery life, light, good screen, lots of apps, open platform.
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I love my little computing companion but I often find myself missing a full sized keyboard. I have been looking at several of these portable and flexible keyboards, but I can't seem to make up my mind about which I should buy. I don't want the keyboard to be overly expensive, but I want it to be good quality. Also, how difficult is it to type on these keyboards? Thanks!"
