"but with the lightweight Lotus-derived frame on top"

ooooh you mean exactly like the Tesla ?
Even as a hackintosh user, I have to agree with TMM, to a certain point.

The price apple puts on os x, 129$ takes into consideration that the user has an apple computer already running os x. So the new copy os x is an upgrade, not a complete new buy, or license... Kind of comparable to photoshop that is upgradable for 199$ but buying a complete new license is 699$. Apple doesn't really a have a choice if they want to keep the hardware closed then to work that way or don't get a much bigger market share by tomorrow. The development on os x probably costs load and one of the reason os x in nice is because it gets updated every year and a half.

Anyways, if apple was to make clones or sell licenses, I'd expect the price to be much higher than 129$ for non apple hardware.
Flame me if you want, but the design apple went with NEEDS a chip somewhere in the remote. Otherwise, there would be like 7 wires going up the earphones if all the switches were directly routed to the ipod, requiring instrument grade machining just to make the tip of the of the 1/4" plug. It quite easy to see that the remote interface talk via USB to the iPod. So obviously, there is some kind of encoding that gets done. The real question is, will apple actually make 3rd party companies pay for the encoding or if they put some kind of identification device in there. Further proving that the people suggesting this are idiots, they call it DRM. Where is the freakin' media in a switch talking to a PMP !?!

Knowing apple and their money sucking ways, they probably did put some kind of identification system. But we might as well and see if they in fact make that info available to the public orif they in fact have an ID system as, at the moment, there is no proof of it.

Think before you post, engadget, no ? Obviously there is a chip in the remote, there would be too many wires otherwise, not to mention additional chips in the iPod to read it.

PS, the shuffle design is horrid and I'm getting quite pissed off by apple's ways.

-not an apple fan, simply a lucid reader.
Bottom line... we actually own this place ?

I don't really like the tone engadget has taken on this post. Newsflash, it's the Internet. Mind you I must admit that most comments left by users have much more to do with their personal feelings than what they mean or what the topic is about. Mind you engadget, if you take a stance, there will always be people who won't have taken the same.
Euhm, jtshaw. Kind of hard to read you here. Is (open == safe) or is (open != safe). Two completely different ideas there.

Kind of to sorry to late for google on this one. Mind you, they could put a real switch that doesn't enable apps to roam. Probably quite easily actually.
Aaaaw, I remember building up a AMD 486 with my dad, back in the day. I actually used it two-three years back when my other computer wasn't working, it was able to run a flash game AND run msn messenger at the same time !
all hail the low-pass filter !
osx86 a disaster ? wtf, a bunch of dudes worked there asses off to bring osx to the masses. Sure it doesn't work for everyone, it works absolutely perfectly for me. But it's getting better and better every day and is quite a feat. If someone gives you a lottery ticket... and you don't win, you call it a disaster ?

Anyways, looking forward to something new and shiny from apple in the coming weeks.
And here I am wanting to buy a laptop... Should I wait for the new macbooks to come out and then have a good deal on one of the current macbooks or get a new one if it ends up being an update worth for, rather than buying one right now ?

Though right now, I can have the macbook with a free ipod touch (university freebie) though I woulndn't be able to sell it at a reasonable price, if the new ones are coming. (as I'm pretty sure something major will happen with the touch and I'm not too keen on it either)
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I need help! I want a small pocket camcorder but I'm not sure which one to get. I don't want to fall into the hype of the Flip because I worry two hours won't be enough. What should I be looking for when considering a small camcorder and where can I get a good quality one with expandable memory? Thanks!"
