Did Hall of Fame Speech Save Michael Irvin's Broadcasting Career? {Fanhouse NFL Blog}
Aug 7th 2007 2:47PM After reading through most of the comments on here, I am some how surprised that on one has mentioned long in the tooth, blabber mouth, sports announcer and play by play man, Joe Buck. Yes, I will give Buck kudos for at least sounding lively, and he seems to know his info, but he brings nothing to the game but a bunch of endless banter. I mean, this man never shuts up to even let the game breathe! He is just annoying. Also, Al Michaels is great and when paired with Madden is even better! Mike Tirrico is subperb!
In my opinion, Bryant Gumbel is stiff in his annoucing skills; personally, I think he's more of a sports journalist, and Real Sports is best suited for him. Now, his brother Greg Gumbel is actually good at the in studio stuff. And I agree that Dick Enberg's time has come and gone, but it comes to show you, that apparently, there may be uninspiring crop of younger broadcasters that lack the umph and personality that's needed to deliver a great play by play experience (however, I think it deals with the network execs not wanting to invest in someone who has the makings of a true and very good broadcast sports play by play announcer).
And for the person who rudely called Bryant Gumble a racist and didn't back up their remarks with concrete evidence shame on you. Yes, I will agree that Shannon Sharpe is a "mush mouth", but at least he is knowledgable about the game, and can perhaps be given some annuciating classes. Sharpe is very enthusiastic and you can't say that about too many folks on-air.
Lastly, it amazes me how many so-called sports fans are quickly always rushing to the race card or the insult card by referring to Michael Irvin as a crack addict or Gumble as a racist. Let's just stick to the matter at hand. Do, I see anyone calling Tony Kornheiser anything out side of his name of persona? Which in my opinion, Kornheiser is a lousy color analyst who adds nothing to the broadcast and is sometimes a stumbling-mumbling nervous idiot. I think Kornheiser should stick with writing his sports column and feature stories for the
Washington Post, and he is very over-rated. Ahem, I think his counter-part, Wilbon is the better of the two (and race has nothing to do with this), and would make a better NFL color analyst. Anyway, these are my opinions. :-)
