iPhone 2.0.1 firmware out for iPhone and iPod touch {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Aug 5th 2008 7:57AM actually it asks you if you would like to buy it again. Apple has to pit it in your queue to download.

iPhone 2.0.1 firmware out for iPhone and iPod touch {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Aug 5th 2008 12:58AM I have been waiting well over an hour trying to update. It's still "backing up". And that sucks because last time I did that I lost half my Apps. Apple still hasn't replied to my request about the non-free Apps I lost and want replaced.

I am losing faith. The quality has been non-existent as of late.

Multiple iPhone household? Share your apps. {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Jul 25th 2008 2:20PM Did the new EULA with the iTunes upgrade contain any language about use of apps in this manner?

Apps for Apple TV: sign me up {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Jul 25th 2008 8:23AM Is an iPhone + apps a "Mac"? I don't think so. The aTV can and should have apps. Apple can limit their scope and capabilities. It's not as if you would be doing word processing on it. You'd have apps that add to its multimedia purpose, such as video/audio/picture streaming apps, ability to add remote capabilities (more below), limited games, and media hub centric things such as news, weather, etc.

I think the aTV could be pretty awesome if you could buy an IR blaster and make it your main media controller. Just think of using your iPhone to control ALL your AV equipment. This could be possible if it could blast IR to other components.

There are a lot of apps that fit within the context of the aTV, don't make it a general purpose Mac by any stretch of the imagination, and would make it compelling for people to buy.

Jul 24th 2008 11:31PM Simple (in theory) solution, use Flash similar to what Hulu does. Sure, the studios have to agree, but that's political, not technical.

I don't need Netflix if Apple offered a streaming subscription service.

Jul 24th 2008 11:03PM The aTV isn't the greatest device. You can store music on it, but that's not likely. It will supplement your main library. And if you already have a main library just get AirTunes and stream to your stereo that way at a lower price point.

If you use it for video you are in the minority. Rentals are far too expensive (RedBox is a buck, Netflix streams for $9/month plus DVDs, etc). Rentals need to be $1-$2 max. Purchases are ridiculous, DVDs are cheaper.

And that's it. Music, limited video, and pics if you care. Not that compelling.

Cheaper rentals, cheaper purchases, good streaming content (such as Hulu or other flash-based sites), and apps a la iPhone and you have a winner.

Also, fix the Remote app, it sucks and is severely lacking for aTV. You can't navigate menus at all!

Jul 22nd 2008 8:52AM Free doesn't mean it's good. I can take a dump in a box and give it to you for free. Would you complain about that?

It would be like if Apple limited iTunes to only being navigated in the worst way possible. Sure, it's free, but it would suck.

Apple offers this as a remote for AppleTV when, in fact, it can't control half the functions without also using the little white remote. That makes the product worse as now I have to juggle two remotes.

It will never cease to amaze me how ignorant some people can be.

Jul 21st 2008 10:10PM I am fairly disappointed with Remote. It's a start, but it woefully incomplete.

For example, I can't operate my AppleTV fully with it. I can't navigate all the menus (there is no up/down, no link to YouTube, no way to purchase from iTunes or rent movies, etc). All I can do is stream music or movies to it. In other words I can't get rid of my little white remote, which is a disappointment.

First Look: Mocha VNC Lite {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Jul 21st 2008 9:24AM I could never get it to connect to a Windows machine running UltracVNC. And no Bonjour, so not as cool as it could be for my OS X machines.

But a decent start. Would like to see some competition.
