I called Apple and I have the exact model that has the fire issue. Mine has been getting hot for years. Its not warm, it's blatantly hot. I asked her what they would do about it and she said nothing. I told her I can't leave it plugged in for more than an hour because I gets so hot. She told me not to charge it fully then. I asked her if ipods were made so that you could leave them attached to the cable USB permanently? She responded yes. I told her I would leave mine hooked up over night tonight to see what would happen, as a test of functionality. She told me that would be misusing the product and any damage would not be covered.
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I've found myself using my PC for a lot of conversations lately, and I'm also considering recording a podcast to share with anyone who will listen. There are tons of USB headset / microphones out there, and I'm hoping someone has some solid recommendations based on experience. I'll consider both headsets and standalone mics, by the way, but I'd like to keep the bill under $100 if possible. Help!"
