I'm waiting for the day that optical media is completely gone, Apple or PC
Yep, everyone will be using it for walking and driving, which will cripple the already limited bandwidth that is O2 UK (I hear ATT isn't great either). I can easily see it not approved, but apple will be under so much pressure to let that through. Not that's I'm too interested anyway, I want offline map, I don't want to pay roaming data charges when abroad using sat nav.
yeah, that's why I said Apple may have filed, didn't say Apple has this granted. This is would actually be the worst case because MS would make a hash of the implementation and create something more annoying than the concept itself. But I don't believe either companies will force this on general consumer home PCs so I'm not bothered.
question is, would you rather Microsoft has this patent or Apple? While Apple may have this one filed, I think there is less chance for it to be productionalised than if MS had it.

Either way, at worst case, I can see Macs with that OS in free internet kiosks at shopping mall or coffee shops.
no engadget, we just don't have the space on our little island for the bulky Fat PS3.
X1 = expensive version of Panasonic LX4?
@andrew, re: black people not common in Europe. Which part of Europe are you talking about? I guess UK, France and Netherland are not Europe? Have you ever seen their national sports teams like football, atheletics ... etc?
The TT bundled with WinMo devices doesn't include any maps unless you bought a special bundle from your network provider that includes app+maps. If anything, if would be similar to, IF TT sells for app for free and charge for map packs. Ok, in-app-purchase doesn't apply to free app, so may be $0.99 for app with no map...
This is the exact reason Apple doesn't want JB to be ligitmised. JB and use original softeware is one thing, JB and use pirated software is another. You're ruining the playground for people.
yes you can do what ever you want with the hardware. But you only bought a licensed copy of the software and you are not supposed to do whatever you like with that. Too difficult to understand?

If I choose to use a product in a way it was not designed to, I fully accept the risks. That's why I haven't JB/unlocked mine. I'm probably not qualified enough to criticise them really, but if the hackers found a true hack, it would be to discover apple's private key and sign it properly, then do the activation. Not using a copied key.
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I am looking for a 12- or 13-inch ultraportable that can also play modern games at a reasonable level, for less than $1,000. I know the brainiacs out there can help me out. Love the site, thanks!"
