As a sales associate at Sears where I was employed until just a couple months ago, I would usually recommend Samsung for an LCD and Panasonic of Samsung for plasma. People were generally happy with these recommendations. Both offer good pricing for great TVs. The decision between LCD and plasma came down to various factors including where the television was being put, what would be watched on it, and how much the customer was wanting to spend. Of course I would always tell customers that these were only my opinions and that they should look at the tvs themselves and determine which one has the best picture quality, features, etc. People tended to agree with my recommendations after browsing.
