I think you guys are missing the joke. 'Historical' and 'pirates' conjures up guys with eyepatches, not file sharing.
It's not that difficult- if you don't want to keep using all your customizations, don't update your phone. Simple. If you're content to keep playing within the walled garden, as I am, update away. Everyone wants to have their cake and eat it too.
I'm in a situation exactly like this! Switched my number an hour after activating with AT&T. I also encountered the same error and emailed Apple.
You think possibly, "the word" you guys got was just wrong?
Whatever happened to those Nike iPod controlling watches from months ago?
How long will one of these last?
Of course, Cingular points out that eager buyers are more than welcome to buy it contract-free without activating an account

How much will it cost to buy this phone without a contract? I didn't even know this was a possibility.
Oops. I just wet myself.
I recently bought a FX-01 and love it. The ONLY thing I miss from my Canon Powershots is Stitch Assist mode. Why is there no comparable mode on the Panasonics? How hard or expensive would that be to add? Anyone have any advice for a workaround on the Lumix cameras? I love creating Panoramas using Stitch Assist!
Great, now those in the UK can also enjoy substandard, crappy audio from their favorite DAP.
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I'm pretty much a complete noob when it comes to camera stuff. My wife loves to take pictures, though. So much so that she literally wore out her first point and shoot camera, and the Kodak Z712 I bought for her less than two years ago is starting to act up as well. To compound the matter, we are expecting our first born sometime next year. I fear the Kodak just isn't going to cut it any longer. What would be the best starter DSLR to get? She hates missing photo opportunities due to camera 'lag' so speed would definitely be at the top of the list. Photo quality and features would be next. Price should be no more than $800. I'm not interested in video capabilities."
