USB 3.0 gets seriously detailed {Engadget}

Aug 18th 2008 4:22PM um, when they say backwards compat. they mean that usb 2.0 and likely 1.0 devices will work in the 3.0 port (kinda of like Playstations... cept for the newer non-backwards compat. ps3 editions...) and probably that a 3.0 device could plug into a 2.0, and just run at 2.0 speeds (like a 2.0 in a 1.0)... so if you are hoping to get 3.0 speeds and functionality out of your 2.0 plug, you are out of luck =[

Army generators turn garbage into energy, energy into freedom {Engadget}

Jun 23rd 2008 10:13AM I think another fact to consider is that while you are crying about 4 dollar a gallon gas, other places in the world pay 5-10 dollars for the equivalent volume.

I'm ready to get crucified for it, but gas should be taxed higher anyway. The environmental damage should be an internalized cost; use the difference to fund public transport and greener technologies... infrastructure revamping etc.

Im sad that it took "high" gas prices to teach people to let go of their Hummers and SUVs, but if that is what it takes... so be it.

Boomers seemed to be fixated with making money, more and more, at whatever cost... Why? So you can leave it to your children when you die? If that is the case, consider that it will take far more money then you will ever make to fix the problems that you are leaving us.

Its because companies are not forced to entirely internalize the cost of their damage that past generations lived big, and made so much money, but it cant continue, because the interest rate (so to speak) for the environment is very steep... And no amount of money will make me happy if the world is fracked.

Robots to be our lovers by 2050, not just in Massachussetts {Engadget}

Jun 23rd 2008 9:43AM im gonna take a risk here, and try replying to my comment a second time...

I made a mistake, and assumed that the article was based on the conference I went to just under a week ago, instead of this other one that he also spoke at. Im sure that the content was the same though >_>

Jun 23rd 2008 9:29AM ahh my bad i hadnt rtfa... and i wasnt aware that Levy had spoken at so many other places in such a short amount of time. This article is based on his talk elsewhere, although Im sure that the content is similar/the same.

Jun 23rd 2008 9:09AM The conference was the IdeaCity '08 conference in Toronto Ontario. A group of 50 fantastic scientists, literary experts, performers etc. showed off their passions.

I volunteered at the conference, and between Levy, Aubrey de Grey, Dr. Ben Bova, Satava, Peter Diamandis (who announced his plans to start a rocket plan racing league), Ray Kurzweil (who announced his handheld reading device that can not only rotate, flatten etc etc pictures of text, but also read in 7 languages, and translate) Curtis Suttle, Steve Scherer, Richard Preston, Ezra Levant... etc etc etc I had a blast.

Most interestingly, Richard Satava, a military scientist/surgeon, gave his views into the future of surgery, gene therapy etc... but half of his statements seemed like articles from engadget :P It was a fantastic experience, like TED and EG... but in Canada.

Ubisoft opens up new studio in Kiev {Joystiq}

Apr 30th 2008 10:15AM "Germknödel perhaps?" it is things like this that keep me coming back to this site over other blogs which shall not be named; keep up the good work!

On topic: I have always found it interesting how Ubi is strategically locating offices around the planet, and taking over as one of the number one game developers... impending military coup? Sam Fisher? GRAW? Prince of Persia? Mind control through videogame hypnotics? I think yes

PS3 Grand Theft Auto IV is 640p, nobody cares {Joystiq}

Apr 30th 2008 9:54AM This issue would no doubt be amplified by upscaling... as the 1.5X (in each direction) of 720->1080 is a little easier to map out than 1.6875.

It makes me wonder if on a 1080 screen, something rendered in 540p would look better than something rendered in 640p, as the upscaling would be simplified; which is to say it would look as good as 540p can, while 640p on a 720p or 1080p would not fair so well.

But then again I have been told that things that have been properly upscaled can look better. This makes minimal sense to me as I can hardly comprehend how scaling can improve visual fidelity above the levels originally available.
