Like installed car phones, in-dash GPS devices won't last. The OEM GPS units can't come with you on that business trip to the strange city you've never visited before... which is exactly when you'd want one the most.
Portable is the way to go.
Incidentally, my grandmother is preparing to announce her very own 3.5" GPS satnav with sirfstar III receiver later this year.

It will offer 3D maps, mp3 playback, and picture viewer.

Sheesh, who isn't getting into the satnav game these days? It seems like we hear about 2 or 3 new ones everyday!
Can't say I agree with you David B. I bought the GO910 last June and got nothing but great service when the mount began to prematurely droop. Once that was replaced (for free) it worked perfectly.
SO many sat nav upstarts: Sony, Philips, Porsche, even heard about Ferrari today. Stick to what you do best!

Garmin and TomTom have a stranglehold on the market and continue to be on the cutting edge. I don't get why all of these companies think they can make a better product. ESPECIALLY with a price point that high! The new TomTom ONE is only $500 and Garmin just slashed their prices.

Get with it!
Oh to have those sweet computer hacking skills.
No no no. I'm holding out for Tom Tom One. I think the Tom Tom interface is the best one out there (haven't seen the Fujitsu). Plus, it's half the price of these Nuvis.
I don't know. I've got the Rider from TomTom and between the Navteq maps (different from TT's GO line), antiglare screen, and Bluetooth headset, I don't see why I should drop $100 more on this piece that looks WAY too bulky.
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I just switched to Sprint from Verizon about three months ago for the Pre. Then I went for the Hero about a week ago. Now, I miss my hardware keyboard and am thinking about switching to the Moment. I am still able to switch back to Verizon if I want and get the Droid when it arrives. Should I just trade up to the Moment when it comes out, see if I like it, and if not switch to the Droid? Or something else entirely? Help!"
