MSN Direct now on Windows Mobile {Engadget}

Feb 11th 2008 12:45PM Damn - just tried to isntall to a T-mobile "Wing" but the isntaller failed as phone is not supported. Very weird that they support smart phones (with no touch screen) but leave out support for fully functional windows mobile 6 touch screen phones (which also have the smart buttons).

How to build your own UPS {Engadget}

Oct 14th 2007 6:12AM I did something similar recently. I needed more up time for my server and related peripherals in my basement. So I took an old UPS, removed the gel pack and wired the UPS to an old (but working) spare car battery.

The UPS has a low charge current so it takes several days to fully charge the battery but my power cuts are far less frequent so it works well. The run time is now over a hour vs. 10 minutes before.

For safety I only used a sealed battery. It is located in my non habit ed basement with reasonable air flow. I placed the battery inside a "battery box" (~$10 from a car / marine parts store).

For extra versatility I have a 12V car power socket mounted in the battery box and the ups connects to it with a 12 male plug. That way I have a convenient, always charged battery to take with me camping (to use with my portable inverter that plugs into a 12v car power socket). Aside: I put the gel pack back in place for these trips.

Also having a fully charged portable car battery available at all times has also been very handy in the last few months to jump-start both a car and a lawnmower. :-)

Skype 3.6 beta includes high quality video support {Download Squad}

Oct 11th 2007 9:34AM Nothing to see here...move along....

No really. PC's at both ends must be dual core and only two (yes 2!) models of logitech web cam are supported in skype for "HQ" video calls.

Makes me wonder how they actually find Beta testers for this, the chances of two people who know each other meeting the above limtied requirements must be very rare.

Come on skype, lots of web cam companies have been making 1.3Mp still and VGA res video compliant web cams for over 2 years, why not make software that support that large hardware base?

Aiptek cranks out 720p pocket camcorder for $170 {Engadget}

Sep 13th 2007 11:56AM Interesting that digital zoom might actually work.

If it really does use a 5-8mp sensor then with 1280x720 being approx 1 megapixel there is plenty of magnification that can be done wihtout enlargeing pixels. Of course you will be pushing agsint the quality of the lens and noise of the sensor if not averaging several sensor pixels for each recorded one any more.
