Video: Android walkthrough on T-Mobile G1 {Engadget}

Sep 23rd 2008 12:43PM If you just want a phone, there are already plenty of options out there. Nothing's revolutionary about building a good cellphone. But building a good iPhone competitor that's far more open - that's revolutionary.

Nintendo thwarting Wii modders with epoxy-locked chips; Wii Backup Loader abandoned {Engadget}

Sep 19th 2008 12:17PM "Modchip-Proof" is probably a bit strong. "Dremel Requiring" might be a better descriptor. Hell, the little parts are already so tiny that you're better off taking your wii to a "professional" than trying to install anything yourself, and I'll be that the good professionals will soon be able to work around the epoxy situation.

Panasonic's Lumix G1: world's first micro Four Thirds camera {Engadget}

Sep 12th 2008 1:42PM I had a much earlier version of the Lumix, and I frickin' love the design. They feel like a serious camera in your hand. Maybe it's because they ripped off the Leica (earlier versions even had "Leica" badged lenses), but they're super fun to use. I don't know how much value you're getting at this price, but cut it down to the $300 range, and I'd be all over one as a supplement to my DSLR.

Android Developer Challenge winners announced {Engadget Mobile}

Aug 29th 2008 5:57PM Yeah, I'm not sure how they're different either. I'm also confused at how they're getting data on prices at nearby local stores. Because even with the awesome power of the internets at my fingertips, I have no idea how to get the price of a box of cheerios on the shelf of the grocery store down the street without going down there.

Maybe they'll get prices form other application users, a'la GasBuddy, which would be fine, but restrict that functionality to popular items at popular stores.

Vongo dies, very few notice {Engadget}

Aug 12th 2008 1:36PM Interested in Vongo's particular brand of subscription model? No.
Interested in paying a monthly fee to be able to stream high-quality movies on demand? Absolutely.

If/when the major studios finally decide to give up and sign on with something like Netflix watch it now, I'll be the first to pay $10/month for something like that. But, so long as the services are hampered by poor selection and DRM that requires Windows, nobody's going to get anywhere.

Panasonic's Lithium Vivi RX-10S electric bike does regenerative braking {Engadget}

Jul 7th 2008 10:40AM I'm glad to see the technology being developed, and even with the regnerative breaking these seem to be priced quite a bit lower than Schwinn's lithium bikes http://www.schwinnbike.com/products/intbikes_detail.php?id=892.

With my 50 mile commute it would take me a little over 7 months of riding to work on one of these to pay for itself in gas savings. But, since I live in bike-hostile Southern California I'd probably be squashed by a hummer long before I realized the savings.

Sprint's Motorola Q9 / Q9c gone for good? {Engadget}

Jun 23rd 2008 1:46PM As a current Sprint Q owner, let me say Thank God, it's about time. I hate my Q more and more with each passing day. Perhaps now it will break and I can have it replaced with something less awful.

Eyeballs-on PumpTop TV {Engadget}

Jan 9th 2008 5:42PM The station where I fuel up next to my work (Riverside, CA) has these. I'm bothered that even during the time it takes me to pump 10 gallons, I'm already seeing repeats.

I'd be happy to watch the news and a couple adverts while I pump, but you'd think they could have more than 5 minutes of unique content.

Lenart Studios kicks out GPS / LCD-equipped surfboard {Engadget}

Jul 23rd 2007 5:41PM Yeah, where is that?

Lenart Studios kicks out GPS / LCD-equipped surfboard {Engadget}

Jul 23rd 2007 5:39PM You sound like the type of person who's a blast to be next to in the lineup.

Now, when I'm sitting in the ocean in a less than optimal day, I often wish I could know exactly when the next good swell was going to hit. It seems that without fail as soon as I go into the beach for a rest, or take some sissy little wave, the perfect swell rolls in while I can't get on it. It'd be great if my board suddenly started freaking out and saying, "Hey, idiot, the wave of the day is on its way, get back out there."

However, I don't think swell tracking is this precise yet. And the other features are more of a gadgetophile thing than a surfing thing. I'm not sure there's enough surfer / engadget reader crossover to make something like this viable.

And the "Emergency Services after a wipeout" thing sounds ridiculous. I mean, how could the board tell the difference between a normal wipeout and a life threatening wipeout? Maybe an emergency beacon locater that you could manually activate in case you were towed out to sea or something, but automatically activated seems like a recipe for lots of false positives.

How about a ding-proof board? That'd be a truly revolutionary advance in surfing technology. No more freaking out every time I take a beach-break.
