This is a great, an android phone that runs on a $50 unlimited plan, even though it is iden so the coverage/speed won't be a phenom. This strikes closer to the heart of what android should be though, a phone you can take and root, upgrade to the latest version, and run on a low cost network.
I really hope they don't give linux the shaft, since if you run windows you may as well just use Windows Media Center.
I typed out a huge paragraph I intended to post but the fact is I can sum this up pretty quick. Nokia has too many platforms and it scares developers, their app store sucks, and the only thing they really do well is hardware design. They have a 50 billion dollar market cap, they're quite large. Then you have Palm, they have a great operating system but don't have the resources to really push their devices into markets quickly and effectively. They also are working on developing a good IDE for their phones. Nokia's should buy Palm, but here is the trick... they need to walk away from the money spent on symbian and maemo. I know that neither tech is bad and they both deserve a shot, but imagine how much more sane this would make the phone market. Great, high powered GSM phones running WebOS with a unified App store and developers kit backed by Palm and Nokia. Just brand Nokia phones with 'Powered by Palm' and get into a real race against Android which btw is crushing the life blood out of webOS right now. Palm has a market cap of 1.5 billion, Nokia could basically pay in twenties...
are you sure it wasn't gimpage?
RIM has a problem right now. Companies buy their devices because executives and others are familiar with blackberries and they offer great IT management solutions. Microsoft will eventually match this in some way, and likely Android and WebOS will have similar solutions. I don't know about Nokia or Apple on that end. It doesn't matter though, if the blackberry OS doesn't evolve to effectively compete with these other operating systems RIM will be in for some rough years. My company just got new tours into peoples hands and the OS is the epitome of average in the smartphone world.
I like these new mobile phone operating system wars, but hopefully whoever comes out on top it isn't MS. I don't think I could stand them being able to take the mobile space and the desktop space. I'd put money on android/iphone OS but I'd really like web os to be in there.
It doesn't run Irix by default so it scks.
They make nice laptops, I think if you put OSX on a thinkpad it's almost too much sexy hitting too much functional design and results in 5lb's of dark awesome. I'll test my theory at work (I run the LHC on the weekends), well, after I get done throwing soda cans and boots in there...
Blackberry has basically managed to generate absolutely no hype whatsoever for this phone. With WinMo 6.5, WebOS, Iphone 3.0, and Android 2 all knocking on RIM's door, the only thing stopping a mass move would be a BES equivalent and carrier support. If Verizon/ATT get the Pre and palm continues improving their IT functionality, those things could start to really cut into RIM's market.
Why are we even replying to MONKEY's comments, especially since he raped and killed that poor girl in 1994. It's just terrible, if it happened, which it probably did.
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I'm heading to university next year, and I've purchased a MacBook. I'm also taking my four year old desktop, just in case I'm left with no computers when the MacBook is being repaired or whatnot. With only two USB ports on a MacBook, I want a Bluetooth mouse. Budget is about $100, and of course, it needs OS X support. Thanks for the help!"
