my roommate and i combined our libraries into one monster 240+ GB archive (and growing). Most tracks are at least 192 mp3, with a significant portion at 320 mp3. One of my low-priority projects is to re-rip my fave stuff into Apple Lossless. My old 400 MHz G4 tower acts as the iTunes server, transmitting to an Airport Express connected to my main surround system. I have a VNC server running on the G4 for those times when we're too lazy to get off the couch and happen to have our laptops near us. Even though the library is so large, it's still very usable on the 400 G4. It's slow, but the "get info window delay" is nowhere near as bad as the people above have mentioned... they must be doing something wrong. Maybe they need to Consolidate their libraries; having the files spread out all over the place could lead to the performance problems they're having. We just have everything on a 320GB external firewire drive.
I think the key is that you don't stream TO an aTV, unlike the APE - the aTV streams FROM whatever computer is your iTunes server. So the same thing is accomplished, but with a reverse interface.
I have almost all of the smaller Apple boxes of mine up on a shelf above the living room computer, sort of on display. Next to them are the last three OSX boxes. Looks nice.
music-type people: since Echo apparently isn't planning on updating their Indigo cards for ExpressCard, i wonder if this would be an acceptable workaround?
the real question is, of course, how well the pitch control works.... the lack of pitch control was what made the original one such a joke. But if this one can control the pitch, it's something to look more closely at. Only having to use one iPod is also a great upgrade. This is what the original one should have been; i'll reserve judgement until i can try the pitch out.
To all those people complaining about still having to plug these into the wall, quit yer bitchin! Have you considered the fact that you can now put all those hard drives out of the way, on a shelf, in a closet, whatever, and not have them cluttering up your desk? Sure, you still have to plug them in, but come on, this is a great step.
oh please, spare me. remember, when the rapture comes, the rest of us get their stuff.
I have one and agree it is great. They also make a base-less model that is great for laptops. Most of their stuff is available on macproonline.com (not affiliated, just found it the other day and was psyched to find all their discontinued products there). They had great designs, their stuff is hard to find now, some of it is being distributed by a japanese company.
The previous version didn't work for me, so i was using flickrUploadr as a stand-alone. This one works now, it's great!
man, i remember those old IP configuration screens. Good times, good times.
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I love my little computing companion but I often find myself missing a full sized keyboard. I have been looking at several of these portable and flexible keyboards, but I can't seem to make up my mind about which I should buy. I don't want the keyboard to be overly expensive, but I want it to be good quality. Also, how difficult is it to type on these keyboards? Thanks!"
