How would you change GamePark's GP2X F-200 handheld? {Engadget}
Apr 19th 2008 12:28PM first, i love my gp2x f200 ...
but the thing that really irks me about the f200 is the digital volume control. it's clunky to use ... a slider or dial would have been so much better than the buttons. granted, you can use the buttons for things other than volume in software, and that's kind of cool.
the directional pads are much better than the original joystick, tho their design isn't perfect. once too much beer and sweat spilled down the dpads at a show and they become unresponsive and sticky. i fixed that by opening the unit up and cleaning the deep dpad wells out, along with the pads. they were still sticking so i put some triflow bicycle lubricant down the edges around the dpads and that did the trick! better than new, so silky smooth action!!!
battery ... my only complaint here is that it could use a hardware battery indicator! thankfully the gp2x will feed you the battery voltage level, so it's possible to implement a battery indicator in software ... and marc nostromo has put one in piggy tracker =)
i like the fact it uses AA because i travel a bit and can always find AA, and it's quicker to swap out a set of AA than it is to find a power plug to feed my laptop battery in an airport. it runs a good while on the hybrid (enloop style) batteries, i typically take 6 of those with me.
remember the old DMG-01 (gameboy) rechargeable power packs you could buy and put in instead of 4AA batts? gamepark should come out with a similar lithium ion setup to put a muzzle on all the complainers =)
other than that, i'm just keeping my fingers crossed that the development community sticks with it for long enough that the software matures. there aren't many touch screen apps but termula2x would be awesome if it had a full screen iphone-style touchpad drawn with some transparency over the terminal feedback window ... would make it quite a bit more usable for haXx9n on the go. right now i feel like i have to have another computer around to make full use of my gp2x (mostly just for file system stuff and editing config files).

durability is all i'm after. as a touring musician and commuting cyclist i've killed more than my fair share of hard disks. i'd still back my data up but maybe i wouldn't be replacing the drive in a year.

Oct 4th 2006 12:11PM if someone writes linux drivers for sdio then the gp2x could finally live out it's wifi dreams this card. best part is, no protruding bits to snap off!

if this thing can be set up to suck rss/podcasts and play them in the morning when i wake up ...

Jul 14th 2006 8:30PM fujitsu's legendary build quality? i'm not sure what the legend states but my fujitsu lifebook 7000p is built like crap. plastic holding the case to itself has cracked and it feels flimsy--if i put my wrist near the touchpad i can hear the hard drive whining as it's being touched.
granted i toured europe with it and am always playing gigs in bars, but other musicians i know using laptops don't have the same problems.
