After much trouble with FM transmitters -- like the OP, my car has no cassette player -- I finally decided to drop some cash on an "iPod integration" unit from DICE Electronics (http://diceelectronics.com). Sound quality is perfect, I can just keep the iPod in the glove compartment all the time and not worry about whether it's charged (or draining the car's battery), and it even shows track titles on my Prius' big LCD screen. It's about $150, but IMHO definitely worth it.
