iPhone 3G reception woes unfixable? Maybe, maybe not {Engadget}

Aug 14th 2008 4:04PM I think that 3G reception is inherently flawed (at least on AT&T) and I will share my experience. I have had many different 3G capable phones over the past couple of years and have always had issues in one place which is my house. I have full 3G reception at my house as well. Calls will drop around 50% of the time. If I switch the phones to use EDGE or below only, the dropped call problem goes away.

I have done a lot of research into this and have found that it is not a phone issue (since I have experienced this on many 3G phones), but actually a network issue. There are issues with EDGE to 3G handoff (ie cell towers) in certain specific areas that cause this to happen. It is a result of EDGE competing in an area where 3G is also implemented. If I am anywhere but in my house or surrounding area, I can turn on 3G and have no problems.
