AT&T offers SIM-only service, attempts to maintain "most open" status {Engadget}

Jan 21st 2008 5:57AM I don't understand it either.

The whole point of SIM only deals (in Europe, at least) is that the carrier isn't subsidizing the price of the phone.

Thus, you get cheaper line retail and a 1 month minimum contract period.

AT&T seem to be giving customers the worst of both worlds!

1.1.2 iPhones now unlocked... 3 days too late {Engadget}

Jan 18th 2008 9:39AM Nokia sell direct from their US website and at their flagship stores. The phones are totally unlocked and unbranded. The downside is you pay a premium for them.

Is this Windows Mobile 7? {Engadget}

Jan 6th 2008 5:40PM So innovative that it's already available on the Nokia N95 via third party software.

AdAge asks Gates about Hodgman to ill effect {Engadget}

Mar 16th 2007 6:14AM In the UK, the roles of the PC and Mac are played by a duo of comedians called Mitchell & Webb. Mitchell & Webb are most widely known for their (hilarious) sitcom "Peep Show".

Here's the description of the series from the DVD release:

"Meet Mark and Jeremy. Mark's the sensible one, a working professional with a slightly disconcerting interest in WWII. Jeremy is a lazy waster with half-arsed dreams of becoming a musician but can never get his act together."

So I guess what they're trying to say is that both PCs and Macs are deeply flawed, just in different ways.

Stolen Zune recovered while attempting to join the social {Engadget}

Mar 15th 2007 3:44PM Sounds like the stolen Gizmondo story: http://www.engadget.com/2005/10/20/gizmondo-thief-busted-by-gps/

Except, perhaps, that the Zune isn't a scam designed to net the CEO a bunch of exotic cars (I hope!).

HTC slides in with "Nike" P5500 {Engadget}

Mar 9th 2007 6:57PM They can add all the features they want but it's still UGLY.

I doubt HTC will ever be anything more than a niche player in the cell phone market.

Nokia E90 with American 3G? Not looking good {Engadget}

Mar 8th 2007 3:46PM The problem is that even if Nokia did release it with the US 3G bands, I doubt an American carrier would pick it up.

We've seen it before with so many other high-end Nokia smartphones. AT&T sometimes have a sniff around (like the Cingular-branded N80 that was spotted) but rarely release anything. T-Mobile don't seem to be interested at all and Nokia have pulled out of the CDMA market, which rules out Verizon and Sprint.

Saving a couple of dollars per device when you sell a million phones a day adds up to big bucks. There's no sense in Nokia adding US support if it isn't going to make them money.

Motorola's MOTORIZR Z8: a Symbian "kick-slider" with HSDPA {Engadget}

Feb 12th 2007 3:45PM Keith - It's 3GSM this week, the biggest event in the mobile calender. It's the week when all of the big manufacturers and carriers announce their hot new products. Just like this hot one. :)

BT's underwhelming Videophone 1000 and 2000 {Engadget}

Feb 11th 2007 11:24AM Europe and Japan have had video conferencing cell phones for years, but no-one is really interested. Video phones are the future in the same way that the Sinclair C5 was the future back in the 80s. :)

Sony Ericsson's Walkman W880 reviewed {Engadget}

Feb 7th 2007 5:02PM "I don't know why companies continue to bother with this form factor. I mean yeah, there's a niche there that needs to be filled, but at best, you release your phones as clamshells and sliders first, *then* come in with a similar candybar. SE seems particularly stuck on this format lately; I guess they see themselves as its lone remaining champion, and hope to fill that niche all by themselves."

They continue because 90% of phone buyers live outside the US. Europe alone makes up 30% of the market and Europeans generally prefer the candybar form-factor. It's far from a niche. :)

It's also a UMTS 2100Mhz device, so I doubt it'll even see a US release.
