TiVo deathwatch update: it's still on {Engadget}
Jun 2nd 2007 10:40AM I just got a Series 2 DVR. I would have gotten a 3 but didn't for two reasons. It is too expensive (but not by much and the more important reason is the second reason) and the TivoToGo features are not enabled in the Series 3 and I have no confidence they ever will be as they've promised. I used to have the DirecTV tivo and I loved it. However, there have been 2 other DVRs that I've loved also. UltimateTV was way ahead of its time and was great. Also, the Dish Network HD DVR was really nice. It's interface kinda sucked, but it had several features that Tivo should integrate immediately. It had Dual Tuner and Dual (discrete) output as well as RF Remote controls (2 remotes to control the 2 discrete outputs). So you could set up one box to control all the tvs in the house and watch or record two programs simultaneously.
The one DVR that I wish I could have taken a sledge hammer to is Comcast's HD DVR (Motorola Phase 3). It constantly froze up on me while I was watching recorded programs, its hard drive was WAY too small, and its interface was crap. I ditched it for my new Tivo Series 2.
Is XM radio temporarily offline? {Engadget}
May 21st 2007 2:34PM i think one of their Sats has stopped transmitting. I had only an intermittant signal while driving at lunchtime. I've never had this problem before. This may make my decision to drop XM (now that O&A are suspended) REALLY easy if it doesn't come back soon...
XM facing subscriber, sponsor backlash over Opie & Anthony suspension {Engadget}
May 17th 2007 6:00PM Supposedly, they were suspended for blowing off XM management when told not to comment about last Friday's incident. While I'm not going to cancel my subscriptions just yet, I fully intend to if and when O&A are actually fired. I don't believe XM would be so stupid as to actually fire their biggest subscriber draw. The only possible explaination as to why they might actually fire them is that they have information that the merger is about to be approved by the FTC and they don't think they need Howard AND O&A both.
Frrrrrrankus!
TiVo CEO promises lower-priced HD TiVo this year {Engadget}
Mar 9th 2007 5:21PM I don't think TiVo is all that great. All the DVRs out there that I've used (DirecTivo, Dish Network DVR, and now Comcast DVR) are pieces of crap compared to my very first DVR...DirecTV's UltimateTV. It was way ahead of its time and worked very well. The only reason I gave it up is because one of the two tuners (first DVR with that option I believe) failed when it was about 2 years old, and DirecTV had discontinued supporting it. So I was forced to go with the DirecTiVO. It wasn't bad, I did like the interface, but it was not as nice as the UltimateTV. I think the only reason UltimateTV failed is that it was very poorly marketed. They didn't educate the consumer enough and the retards at Best Buy told people they had to spend the extra $10 a month for internet (ala web tv) even if they didn't want it (that was completely untrue, but I had to argue with the store manager and get him to pull up the web site so I could prove it). Anyway, that DVR was on the market way before TiVo Series 1 became popular, and it had most of the features of Series 2.
My last service Dish Network, did have one nice feature that I wish others would pick up on. It had dual tuners and DUAL OUTPUTS. You could put the DVR in "DUAL" mode so that you could output to a second coax output to other tvs throughout your house and watch a separate program from what your main TV was watching. It could be live or recorded. To make this feature really function well, the DVR came with an RF remote that had virtually unlimited range and did not need line-of-sight with the DVR. My only complaint about that DVR was that the user interface wasn't that great.
Lastly, my current DVR, Comcast's HD DVR from Motorola is a complete POS. It is buggy (freezes and needs to be reset at least once a week), its hard drive is WAY too small (I don't dare to record in HD), and its user interface is archaic. The only reason I have it is because I've got too many trees to have Dish or DirecTV, and the Series 3 TiVo is WAY too expensive.
I wish these DVR manufacturers would get their act together.
Apple iPhone sized up and compared to Treo 750, Moto Q, and BB Pearl {Engadget}
Jan 9th 2007 10:43PM Does anyone know if there will be an "inflight" mode for this phone? Something that would allow all wireless features to be disconnected so we can appease the idiots at the FAA that lie to us and say that our wifi, bluetooth, EDGE, and GSM will bring down the 777 we're flying cross country on? One of my main uses of my iPod is music/video while flying. It would be a deal-breaker if I couldn't use the iPod features of my iPhone on an airplane...
Today's Apple rumor: home video streaming device on the 12th {Engadget}
Sep 5th 2006 3:49PM My bet (and hope) is still for a 6th gen Video iPod (not iPod with Video) to be released on 9/12 along with the new movie downloads from Disney (and others?). I've been waiting to replace my 2nd Gen iPod since they released the sad 5th Gen iPod w/video. If the 6th gen iPod is anything like the rumors out there (full, widescreen iPod with touch screen click wheel), I'll be first in line (assuming my wife doesn't kill me first)!
Tivo Series 3 Unboxed {PVR Wire}
Sep 1st 2006 3:07PM My Dish HD DVR is still better, get with the times TiVo. I don't want to have to buy a DVR (especially at $799!) for every room. Dish DVR = 2 tuners, 2 unique outputs in dual mode. Why is Dish the only DVR that does that yet?
Yes...I know Dish is going to have to pay TiVo through the nose for copying their technology...but they did at least make it better!!!!
