Confirmed: Halo 2 coming to the PC, Vista only {Joystiq}

Feb 9th 2006 7:17PM Not really in a hurry to switch to Vista myself, I'm currently setting up a computer with Vista Beta 2 build 5231. Not too amased really, the UI is very good looking, gotta give it that, but so far doing anything else on it has been unnecessarily difficult, and unless you switch everything back to classic panel mode all the advance options are hidden. Granted I've only been playing with it for about 3 hours, but it's yet to really wow me enough to make me actually want it. Same thing goes for Halo2, definitely not enough to make me want to put that much money into an upgrade and game. Making it Vista only is kind of rediculous too, it's not like computers running xp couldn't meet the same specs.
I'll wait until I really see something good come out of Vista before making that jump.

Real friends, real relationships forged online {Joystiq}

Feb 9th 2006 2:03PM I know I'm living proof that online friendships can move on to something greater. I met my fiance on a site called DeviantArt about 2.5 years ago, and we're getting married on July 8'th.
We started out just by critiquing each others submissions, etc. then instant messaging, then using calling cards, etc. to talk to each other. Got to the point where I flew halfway across the country just to visit her for a month, then we became best friends and lovers, now we're getting our happy ending all thanks to a chance encounter online.
So, yes, you can meet friends just about anywhere, but you do have to be more careful online and always be a little suspicious because while a good online relationship can give you a good idea of what someone is like, that doesn't always carry over to real life.
I'm just lucky that I found someone so incredible online and she really does live up to how great I thought she was and would be in real life.

No connection between Robida killings and video games [Update 1] {Joystiq}

Feb 8th 2006 5:48PM Wait a minute... how did Jack Thompson get a star?
Do those things work by volume of posts or # of idiotic rants or something?

Also, on the point, this article does seem kind of like a shameless way of saying "Take that Jack!" It's nice to know definitively that he didn't have any games, etc. But just doesn't seem quite right.
And for Jack himself, I don't see what posting your letters to those people on this forum says about anything except you like publicity, no matter how small.
And the whole fiasco with the flowers was pretty sad. Expected, but still sad. It's just some flowers and he gets all crazy about conspiracies and such.

Oblivion: Xbox 360 vs. PC {Joystiq}

Feb 2nd 2006 6:56PM I don't really care about the console vs. pc thing, I use my pc for FPS's like half-life, unreal, etc. It's just almost impossible to beat the mouse for a fps input.
What I don't get is why people are still using the "You play from a computer desk. I play from my couch." argument. Any computer with a decent video card can output to a tv. Almost all video cards have an s-video output anymore, if not more choices. So you can use your pc from your couch, it's actually pretty easy.

Cash-in on your geocaching skillz {Engadget}

Feb 2nd 2006 12:10PM This may not be how it was intended, but just to clarify, this is how I perceived the joke.
I don't think it's about geocachers actually, I think it's about the company and their fairly strict and tight-lipped rules. To prove my point, I'll use this line that comes after the geocaching joke.
"only a particular balloon's general location is posted, and the first certified 'cacher in the area who calls dibs gets the exact coordinates (plus or minus five decimal places) and an exclusive 48-hour window to retrieve the gear."
If that were put in front of the geocaching joke, I think it would make more sense that it's more about their james-bondish secret agent style security measures than the actual people who do it.
That's what I thought, and if you put it in that context, I think it is very funny.

Blizzard vs. gaymers {Joystiq}

Jan 31st 2006 7:50PM This artical was also mentioned earlier on The Consumerist where I first saw it;

Cash-in on your geocaching skillz {Engadget}

Jan 31st 2006 12:35PM Wow, obviously some over-sensitive people here. I'm a geocacher (kat352234) and I thought that joke was pretty funny.
I've never heard of anyone having any kind of negative image of geocaching, most I've ever got from mentioning it to people was "huh?"
You guys seriously need to lighten up, I thought it was funny. Also, for those of you cacher's who take it a wee bit too far, other people are not called muggles, they're just called normal.
and yes, that was very much sarcasm. :)

25 to Life creator: "I experienced kind of a moral dilemma" {Joystiq}

Jan 26th 2006 5:28PM Because they're thinking ahead, they're a progressive gamestore.
If they started selling videogames, AND health food, then you don't get any more Jared's claiming Video games caused their weight problems.
The healthy food is right there next to the games, if you'd rather buy a crap 50 cent game than some healthy game-themed granola, then it's your own damn fault.

Now that's a progressive game store.

How-To: Build a practical HTPC {Engadget}

Jan 24th 2006 2:17PM In response to iomatic:
The point of ripping a dvd to your htc is that you don't actually have to mess with the disk anymore. If you copied your entire dvd library onto the computer, then hooked it up to your entertainment center, you wouldn't need to find the dvd and put it in your 360 to play it, you'd simply start up the computer and have instant access to every movie in your library.
You could also just use this as a backup if you're worried about damaging the discs through everyday use.
