Verizon takes another swing at AT&T, puts iPhone on the Island of Misfit Toys {Engadget}
Nov 8th 2009 4:52PM My Droid will be delivered tomorrow. So for the next week or so I will be comparing it side by side with my 3GS to decide which one I'll be keeping.
But I have to be honest. The only reason I even bothered to order the Droid was because of the cell coverage pretty much everywhere I frequent.
Spotty at work.
Constant dropped calls at home.
Poor voice quality.
If I know I'll be on a call that will last more then a couple of minutes at home I will fire up skype before using phone minutes.
Can I live with it? Yeah, after all this time I'm used to the dropped calls. Should I have to live with it? Nope, and that's one of the main reasons I ordered the Droid.
Will I miss the extra speed of ATT? Nope, because unless I happen to be near downtown Des Moines I don't have 3G. That includes while I'm at work or in almost any building in the Des Moines area.

Verizon isn't bad mouthing the iPhone. They're bad mouthing the coverage. Heck, if anything in the first commercial they made a point to say what a good phone it was. But the coverage sucks. I bet by the time Verizon does get the iPhone it will also run 3rd party apps in the background so the "iDon't" commercial will be a mute point.

Nov 6th 2009 5:54PM I didn't know Mobil still had the speed pass.
I had one. But then I moved to Iowa. Seems there is not one Mobil station in the state of Iowa. Every surrounding state is loaded with them.

Nov 5th 2009 7:33PM I think I'll be right there with you. I just checked and I can get a 20% discount on service with Verizon through my employer. Not as good as the 28% discount on voice and data with AT&T. But I'm willing to give up 8% to be able to make reliable calls from my house, send and receive text messages in a timely manner, and have clear sounding calls.
Only problem, I think I have to wait until the Droid is officially out before it will show up on the corporate site.

Nov 5th 2009 7:25PM Other then the point that Tony brought up about holding shift to type in all caps I can think of no other time that I wanted to hold one key while typing another. And with that said I would only hold down the shift key while typing only long words. And there was the times when I couldn't even do that if the keys were on the left side of the screen.
I'm sure I must be missing something here, but I don't know why anyone would even want to hold a key (other then shift) while typing out other keys...

I get a new phone pretty much every year. But I'm not charged an ETF for doing so. I don't believe that Verizon is going to charge a ETF for upgrading a phone either. They will just charge you full price for the next phone. The ETF should only come into play when you tell them to cancel service.
Dog buys 5,000 Microsoft points, says he just wanted to check out the Abbey Road DLC {Engadget}
Nov 2nd 2009 3:21PM I really wish Microsoft required some sort of logon when adding points to your account or even purchasing something with points you already have.
My GF and her kids were living with me for a time and there was a couple of occasions where something was purchased "by accident" on the Xbox. With no way to remove credit cards from your account, or to prevent purchases without locking out the entire profile. The live experience comes down to out and out trust that everyone else in the house knows that those "points" = cash spent or blocking the console from the network while your not there to supervise.

Next time you go on a trip. And your out in the middle of nowhere, with no cell signal, with your Pre and the great included navigation. When you finally make it back to an area with a cell signal. Let us know how much you like that included navigation package, will you?

OK, I should have mentioned while driving also. I've tried it in airplane mode. It was very very accurate. I've tried it in downtown Des Moines, yeah its not downtown Chicago, but my Nuvi would have issues with the skywalks connecting all the buildings and would loose signal very easy.
I've honestly not experienced any drift at all. And I have been the passenger in the car just holding my phone and watching the screen because there was nothing better to do.
I can honestly say that the Navigation (with Navigon) was as good as my Garmin Nuvi 350 and actually better since my Nuvi would normally be off by a building or two when navigating to an address. The Navigon app will put me right in front of the door or driveway.
Like I said before. I'm impressed.

Sep 28th 2009 7:38PM I could get the entry level model of my Sony head unit for about the same price. It does bluetooth and has a USB connection on it.
So I can just hook up the sync cable to the iPhone, the head unit will connect to bluetooth when the radio and phone is on. And I have hands free calling, directions through the head unit, and music through the head unit. And the only wire that is involved is the sync cable.
Horrible price. I don't care if there is a GPS receiver built in.
