Apple quietly enables movie purchases from Apple TV {Engadget}
May 1st 2008 9:15PM Since when have you not been able to? I purchase TV shows all the time, but never tried purchasing a movie through the Apple TV. Once all movie studios get on board with releasing rentals on the same day, and not just purchases, then the Apple TV will truly rock.
Yahoo responds to Microsoft ultimatum: more money please {Engadget}
Apr 7th 2008 8:58AM I've invested way too much time into flickr to see it fall into Microsoft's hands. That is the only thing about this whole ordeal that bothers me.
XM / Sirius merger approved! {Engadget}
Mar 24th 2008 8:04PM The argument that they are competing with iPods, FM, etc are so fucking stupid - this will pave the way for a satellite TV merger because guess who they compete with? Cable, broadcast, internet, iPods, iPhones, AppleTV's, etc. I for one fear anything Mel Karmazin touches. He ruing cable TV, and now he's gonna ruin satellite radio. I hope you all love commercials, because you are gonna get a whole lot of them very soon. And for all the Howie lovers who listen to his rhetoric, just understand that he was pushing the merger for his own benefit, not yours. If it didn't go through, guess who doesn't get paid when Sirius goes out of business.
NYC cab drivers lobby for right to use cellphones on duty {Engadget}
Mar 21st 2008 7:52AM This has no legs. There is plenty of proof out there that cell phone talking hinders driving, and in a place as congested as NYC, there is no excuse for these people to be on the phone the whole time. First they don't want to be tracked by GPS, and now they want to talk on the phone all day and night during their work shift? I have an idea - get a new job, slackers.
University jumps on even bigger bandwagon: free iPhones and MacBooks to students {Engadget}
Mar 2nd 2008 11:54AM The total cost of running a college full of Macs is cheaper when you factor in support costs to keep the students up and running. The first major issue - no more spyware and virii taking down whole network segments. The second issue - you can keep hardware in stock because everybody is running the same brand of machine and you know exactly what it needs. Finally, the iPhone as a smart communications device coupled with a Mac a better and easier experience to deal with. If you are requiring your students to have a smart phone, the iPhone's data + voice plan is cheaper than Blackberry plans of the same type.
Sure you could do a Windows based solution that might be cheaper per student up front, but over four years that price will soar over the Mac solution.
The only reason large businesses will not do this is because the software they have invested in restricts them to the Windows platform. Apple has been in education since its inception.
Apple hundreds short of 1,000 movie promise {Engadget}
Mar 1st 2008 11:38PM This one isn't Apple's fault - the studios are responsible for encoding and delivering the content. If it is not there, it is because the movie studios don't have their shit together. On a side not - delays in things like the iPhone SDK are fine by me as long as they get it right before delivery.
Latest financials confirm it: Sprint and Nextel probably shouldn't have merged {Engadget}
Feb 28th 2008 9:43PM I did it a couple of weeks ago. It feels great to call customer service and speak to a person!
Nikon D3 review round-up: survey says you'll want one {Engadget}
Feb 18th 2008 9:43PM I for one am glad you included Ken Rockwell in your review round-up. The fact that the guy is known for not adhering to what the other so-called pros say, and makes a living giving an opinion on how he prefers to take pictures is impressive in itself. Not once does he say in any of his writing that his way is the best, he always says things like "I prefer" or "The way I like to do it". He constantly states that he likes over-saturated colors, but some moron with their own opinion will say he sucks because it doesn't fall in line with what they prefer. He shoots in JPEG because he doesn't Photoshop the hell out of each shot. Not one of the haters would be able to tell the difference either way anyway. I don't think he is a joke to the photographic community because it's not a competition and there is no right way to do things, just do it your way.
For the record, I'm not a fan of Ken Rockwell's photography, but I do enjoy his writing style (even if I don't agree with everything he says).
How would you change the Apple TV (take 2)? {Engadget}
Feb 16th 2008 9:15AM So far my biggest complaint has nothing to do with the Apple TV itself - I just think it sucks to have to wait 30 days for new releases to appear. Other than that, I would love to see some sort of optical drive add-on.
