Proposed law would require carriers to sell contract-free phones {Engadget}

Feb 27th 2008 6:47PM Honestly, this initiative would also make the government more accountable. This isn't about penalizing companies for their success (anti-free market)...but adding transparency.

Truth in fees and final bills is very important for consumers and it also highlights the amount of money that has been tacked on by state and federal authorities. The monthly charge service charge(s) should be posted as final price, not before taxes and fake regulatory fees. Hell, some companies are a few dollars more expensive than others because of their own inhouse fees (ah, the regulatory recovery fee...).

This doesn't hamstring companies (financially or in sacrificing sales), it just gives consumers better choices and transparency. Put aside partisan and idealogical differences aside, every taxpayer should support a government that gives you choice and transparency.

Jan 24th 2008 6:10PM Grrr....takes up ~400MB on the iPhone...how can we delete the firmware image after it's been installed? And despite being 1.1.3, the google maps locate me feature has yet to work (just continues searching).

Apple, Fox join hands in iTunes movie rental deal {Engadget}

Dec 27th 2007 2:57AM aaron: all iTunes files haven't yet been cracked. AAC protected files have been for a quite a while (so you no longer have to burn and rip tracks to gain access).

However, there is no application that is able to strip protected iTunes video of DRM. The closest thing to this at the moment is:
http://www.topvideopro.com/guide/how_to_convert_protected_m4v_m4p_aa_m4b.htm

This however is a work around with the application recording the output and then creating a new file. This is NOT the crack we all desire. It is just a step above taking a video camera and filming your screen. I can't speak to the specifics of the technology, but I'm in the camp if it hasn't been cracked yet (which it's going on a few years now), it probably will not be hacked in the nearterm.

Debitel offering 600 euro "sign-up bonus" for 999 euro iPhone in Germany {Engadget}

Nov 27th 2007 1:03PM Just a few notes from an iPhone owner (not a fanboy, however).

Keyboard...unless you've used the onscreen keyboard for over a week continuously, you really can't judge it. Now, i type faster on the iPhone than a blackberry. If all apps on the iPhone allowed you to rotate the keyboard to landscape mode for larger keys (like they allow for safari), it would be PERFECT.

Camera: I don't want a 5MP camera. Combination devices suck. You want a camera, use a REAL camera. It's current offering is good enough for snapping a quick pic of something.

Flash: No doubt everyone is crossing their fingers that either Apple or user community cook up a way to view flash. Good news is this is fixable, but when is a real question mark.

Memory: Until the iPhone comes in varieties 30gb and up, it really isn't an iPod. When larger capacity is offered, this will finally be the convergence device it was initially touted as.

Document support: Built in readers are already installed and the 3rd party community has cooked up some nice options. Again, this carrot will come with time as it is most certainly in the update cycle chain.
