...uh, for 99% of users, that's all they ever do. plus, web apps make normal apps like photo editing software obsolete for most people that just want to do basic things.
@Wwhat

Uh... ever heard of just a camcorder? I don't own a webcam- I use my camcorder hooked up via firewire to stream. It's probably just an HD cam hooked up to a fiber optic network... in effect, every video camera with firewire is technically webcam-ready.
Get a ThinkPad. T61 is great, and so is the tablet. I have a Toshiba M400 and if you want a tablet and _need_ a CD drive, I'd suggest it. Otherwise, I'd have to suggest the ThinkPad.

I have had no major problems with my M400 and it came with a 3 year warranty, standard. I got a preconfigured model from Newegg. I saved on both the shipping and the fact that Newegg doesn't tax in my state. I like it, but it's still a little chunky for my liking (it's ~4.5lbs).

Don't get a desktop-replacement type. I love my laptop because it has an excellent build. It's not the type you see at a big box store... it was made for business people. If you need the power of a desktop, get one.
The scale refers to how detailed the models will be... or in n00b speak, how pixelized the output is.
You trust C|net?! I can't trust their reviews at all... they're biased many times- for instance, notice that for most Nikon Camera's (including my awesome D40) they rate low and blab about how Canon's are better... ugh. It's kind of hard to believe that crap when every other review out there speaks well of them.

to forbidden_hero:
Huh? You don't like SD because of their size and look? OK, so CF cards are a bit cheaper ($19 vs $21 for a 1gb Sandisk Ultra II card at newegg).

Are you just upset because you probably have tons of CF cards lying around? Don't want to move up to a new technology?

A "pro" who refuses to get a camera that uses a memory card that is pretty much standard in most P&S's and now in DSLR's? Wow. Someone has a grudge... haha.

But seriously... why? I don't understand why it's that big of a deal... its pocket change compared to lenses.
Can we have auto-refresh on page?! haha

or what would be even better (too late now) is a separate (CLEAN) page for these live-from events, so none of the other crap on the page has to load.

oh well i can dream.... 7 minutes!
Toshiba M700 ?

It looks a bit like the M400, but has numerous changes on the looks and the hardware, so I don't know if this can be counted as an "updated" tablet.
"still" shooting miniDV?

Umm... last time I checked, MiniDV is still the standard for video, especially when it comes to actually editing video. DVD cam's are for those who don't wish to edit (or don't have the time to) and Hard Drive cam's are getting popular and better... but MiniDV is far from dead.
1) They are colored DVD's, not CD's.
2) They are light-scribe, which is typically only available in a goldish color.
3) It's marketing. If your Mom is buying a gift for you, they'll probably go for the colorful ones over the dull regular light-scribe's because hey, they look pretty... at least that might be the reasoning behind someone who doesn't know the technicalities of it.

"I love my little computing companion but I often find myself missing a full sized keyboard. I have been looking at several of these portable and flexible keyboards, but I can't seem to make up my mind about which I should buy. I don't want the keyboard to be overly expensive, but I want it to be good quality. Also, how difficult is it to type on these keyboards? Thanks!"
