SlingCatcher gets unboxed, our hearts beat ever faster {Engadget}

Oct 7th 2008 5:52AM My understanding is a wireless adapter is on the way for the slingcatcher as an option. I think it's like $50.00. I'm hoping that same wireless adapter works for the slingbox as well, because the internet though the electric sockets in my opinion is less than optimal, even if it does work.

Dell's Studio Hybrid torn down for kicks and giggles {Engadget}

Sep 21st 2008 10:36PM As long as this studio hybrid can sit next to my TV without taking up much room, run windows media center so I can use my Hava box ( slingbox type ) to stream content from my UK cable box, and work with one of WMC's remotes, then I think i would consider one of these Dell products as an all in one media center. That extra nuovo wireless keyboard Dell sells with it looks kind of decent for websurfing on the big tube as well. Downside....wish it had just a bit more horsepower, but maybe that'll be solved with the next version of it.

Nokia details Maemo 5 OS, hints at next-gen Internet Tablets {Engadget}

Sep 17th 2008 9:00PM Why would they want to use heavy and future dying harddrives?

Why is flashdrive useless when videos run fine on it. I've got 50 movies with me on the N810 (3 8gb mini cards), so what's the problem with flash when it's only getting larger and faster.

As what was just said, skype is voip; the n810 has it. Im, the Nokia has it.

They've already got a good product. All they need is a faster chip and then it'll be a great product

Archos 5, 7 internet media tablets now on sale {Engadget}

Aug 22nd 2008 11:37PM Let's list a few things showing how Archos 5G is much better then the Nokia N810:

- Video recording with EPG,

* "The EPG for the Archos is a joke and you know it. It hardly works correctly and the sad part is you've got to pay for it after a year.

- DVB-T freeview tuner dock,

* "A lot of good that does us outside of Europe."

- USB-host for transfering pictures from digital camera, for emptying SD cards on your Archos hard drive storage, for connecting external hard drives.

* "With the size of SD memory cards in digital camera's these days up to 32GB's. If you've got to transfer 32 GB's worth of photos from your digital camera to your Archos to clear out space, then you really need to ask yourself why, especially if it's a hell of lot easier to replace your digital camera card with another inexpensive SD backup rather than the hassle of transferring it to your Archos.

* The Nokia can also connect an external hard drive. You need to look at the N810 forum

* The Archos is a media machine; it's not productive on a professional level like the Nokia. It may have a faster processor temporarily, but when the next gen Nokia N900 comes out, everything you mentioned as a plus, won't really be a plus. "

Only temporary advantages of N810:

- Pretty bad thumb keyboard (Archos 5G could support full sized foldable USB keyboards on its USB-host)

* N810 supports full size foldable bluetooth keyboards plus there's nothing wrong with the built in virtual Keyboard and if you spend time with the actual built in keyboard, you can type pretty fast. I can do 30wmp on it. The 605wifi's virtual keyboard is pretty bad. Hope the Archos 5 and 7 are improved.

- Pretty bad software (Archos 5G could use Google Android as the OS on a firmware upgrade, just a guess.. just as you can in theory install Google Android on a hacked Nokia N810)

* "All software is open source on the N810 out of the box. There's a large community out there working on programs for the Nokia which are all free. Can you say the same for the archos. and I doubt too many people are going to replace Archos's operating system with android and if Archos did offer you added on anything, they'll probably charge you. That's the archos way. There's even Nintendo game emulators for the Nokia.

Question?
*
Can you do word processing on the Archos - Abiword can for the Nokia
Do you have access to contacts/todo list/ calender - GPE installed on Nokia ( you've got to be online for google docs to work)
Can you play games like Id's quake on the Archos - Nokia can port linux games, emulator games, etc.
Can you control your cable box and DVR from your Archos - Nokia can using Hava player software and hardware which by the way is a huge improvement over the EPG when used with a DVR cable box.
Can you take Archos's GPS out of the car and walk around with it - No
Do you have map access to more countries than Europe and North American on the Archos - No
Can the Archos use Skype? No
Is the battery removable on the Archos 5 or 7? No
Can you leave your archos on standby for 10 days or 20 days with the added 3600 battery which can run for 14 hours? No
Can you run thousands of Palm applications on the Nokia? You can on the Nokia with the Garnet Emulator.

I owned the 605wifi 80GB plus Dock and it was more hassle that it was worth, plus it crashed a lot. It played movies well, had a nice screen, but that's about it. The audio sucked coming out of it for music, the remote rarely changed the cable box's channel to record anything from the dock, and customer service was abysmal. When the N900 comes out, then that would be a good matchup for comparison. Until then, all you've got is a new chip in a fancy new box, but it's the same old Archos.

Archos 5 gets the hands-on treatment {Engadget}

Based on what you've written, I'd say the Nokia N810 tablet fits your needs. I use it as bookreader with its rotatable screen. I'm carrying 50 movies, 35 TV shows, 35 e-books, 400 songs on an internal 2GB memory and 8GB card plus I've got two extra mini 8GB cards that fits into the Nokia's carrying case. I'm using it for listening to internet radio and I'm also using it with LastFM. It'll also play youtube full screen. It has skype, chat, a rss feeder, abiword for word processing, gpe for calender, to do list and contacts. The sound out of it is actually pretty good with a pair of UE superfi 5 pro's. The batteries also are removable and I'm getting 7 hours of use and 10 days in standby per battery. There's actually a 3600mah battery for it that will double that time. It also comes with GPS ( it's been much improved ) and I'm also playing games like ID software's Quake and Quake 2 on it. Added to that I'm also using a slingbox type player on it called Hava letting me watch cable on it as well as control my DVR from anywhere. It's open source, so that gives it a good community in which to add future software and its not tied down like Archos.

The reason I mention all this is even though the next gen archos 5 an 7 are just coming out, I previously owned a 605 wi-fi and after comparing it with the Nokia, I found the N810 had more to offer other than just lots of media content. If that's your thing, then that's great, but if you need something that is compact, is productive enough with it's built in keyboard to do e-mailing, light word processing, web surfing, as well as having media capabilities like video, music, games and streaming video, then the N810 makes a good case for itself. If this makes me a cheerleader for the N810, then so be it.

New Sony Walkman PMPs hit the internet, flash all kinds of colors {Engadget}

Aug 17th 2008 4:49PM When will Sony update its high end players to 32GB's? It's the reason I've held off buying because they're highly rated with sound quality, but flash memory size is a bit of a deal breaker.
