UK planning to monitor and record every phone call, web page, and email sent by citizens {Engadget}

May 21st 2008 1:52AM South Africa perhaps??

I know they're still some glitches, but they're getting better. At least they're learning from the mistakes of the US and UK, and making all new ones of their own. At least the economy is on the uptake there from where it was....and they have a decent arts scene :)

And there, the schools probably can teach the students well enough to understand the subtext behind "1984" so the students can understand implied surrealistic tones used in fantasy litterature to convey intent instead of having the students take everything on face value only without any use of expressed, out-of-the-box thinking

UK planning to monitor and record every phone call, web page, and email sent by citizens {Engadget}

May 21st 2008 12:58AM Not believable?

You DO realize that your writing on a piece of plastic that has more power than EVERY scientist that lived for 10,000 years BEFORE you were born and you can easily have brain surgery performed on you by a surgeon 6,000 miles away while you're sitting in a battlefield hospital where the combat droid dragged you after being struck point blank in the chest by a force vectoring bullet that caused a skull fracture after being defelected by the DragonSkin armour into the wall next to you, sending a brick towards the kevlar helmet that kept the nail in that brick from penetrating your skull at a force greater than that of a mack truck.

But yeah...that stuff could NEVER happen.

But moving on.....

For every blockage of our freedom, there must be those who find ways around it. For every measure, there must be a countermeasure. This is why I hold my laptop and my 995 9mm Carbine as two of my valued possessions. Both will ensure my liberty when the time comes at the right time.

Integrated WiMAX not coming to the Eee PC anytime soon? {Engadget}

May 20th 2008 4:29AM Oh, so Eee news is "overdone", yet we're supposed to salavate over every silicon sleeve that comes out for the iPhone and every pseudo-rumor of a possible alteration to the USB port of a potential upgrade to a mythical MacTablet?

Personally I see the Eee PC as being far more of an impact on consumer laptops and it's industry as a whole, and worth keeping an eye on, especially when it comes to stuff like WiMAX. Because...well, let's face it.... unlike many geeks on here who can blow their income on $2000 and $3000 computers, the rest of the world and many in the US gain more by the innovations in these cheap little buggers than some trendy fashion whore of a computer like the MacBook Air.

Regardless if it's Windows or Linux.....or even Apple OS!

Virgin Mobile: okay, yeah, we're talking to SK Telecom {Engadget}

May 14th 2008 7:41PM It seems as if SK Telecom is in alot more hurt than they're letting on. They're damned lucky to have a brand like Virgin Corp. taking interest. Although, I think that Virgin was honest in the first release saying that they weren't interested, but perhaps were socially pushed by SK Tele insisting that there was an offer in the works. Either way, if the buyout does happen it will either be a bookeeping-only affair or Helio will get totaly absorbed into the Anglo company.

Besides, it's not the English way to air all personal affairs and potential engagements without first asking the father for his blessing. Geez..... some cultures just don't *get* it....

Spy Shots: Ford Transit taxi coming to New York Auto Show? {Autoblog}

Mar 13th 2008 7:57PM Ya know, speaking as a cab driver, I could see myself driving this thing. Hell, ANYTHING with a smaller motor than the damned Vic would be great on gas prices!!

Also, I think that using the standard Transit would be a good thing. Extra head room makes passengers more comfy, and those sunroofs are a no-brainer for NYC skylines and tourists. And, while it has a higher profile, it looks like it would have a smaller turning radius, which is always a good thing.

Now, get these things to the West coast so we don't have to keep feeding V8's. I'd gladly hold onto my beast of an '04 Vic and pay the extra on my lease to land one of these

Magpul FMG-9 flips from flashlight to submachine gun {Engadget}

Mar 11th 2008 4:02PM Common misconceptions here from people who do not own guns and don't mind stereotyping something they refuse to know.

This gun is *NOT* meant for a civilian market. ONLY for security personel. Second, over 80% of all weapons used in a crime are STOLEN!! There is NO way a gang banger will be carrying this because they don't buy guns legally! Most guns used in crimes are .22 pistols, modified .22 rifles, and SINGLE SHOT shotguns. These are guns that are usually stolen from the family closet when their house gets robbed by tweakers looking for DVD players and PS3's to pawn. Firearms like Glocks, Kel-Tecs, AK-47's and the like are VERY VERY rare in crime use. Criminals do not buy guns, they steal them from HONEST citizens. And, the proliferation of stolen guns isn't JUST an American issue, but an issue in countries that ban guns as well (You think England is crime free even when private gun ownership is nearly illegal on all fronts? No!)

Criminals will have guns no matter WHAT ban you put forth, because criminals...*gasp* DON'T FOLLOW THE LAW! Gun bans and stupid restrictions on arms for the honest citizen only encourage criminals to use guns. "Gun Free Zones" are GREAT for criminals because they know the honest folks will be unarmed and perfect victims. There is a reason why there is a second amendment: There is always a balance of power needed. Many countries like France, Spain, Italy, and other European countries allow private gun ownership and do just fine. The US gun laws are a result of the exact same morons on this board who think that guns are either toys or that anyone can go anywhere and buy a gun for $50.

Try educating yourself before acting like you have all the answers.

Magpul FMG-9 flips from flashlight to submachine gun {Engadget}

Mar 11th 2008 2:42PM This was introduced at the Shot Show in Las Vegas Nevada last month. It's manufacturer is mainly known for military contract/Class III prototypes and special constructions, and this has garnered a TON of favourable response. Unfortunately, this will probably not see civilian production due to it's design. It's an awsesome proof of concept, and hopefully we will see these innovations start to trickle down to the consumer market. The folding mechanisim would be excellent for underfolder stocks for PDW's and squad weapons modified for concealed use (by police, CIA and the like)

As for "Paranoid", not every place in North America is as pristine as the Beverly Hills suburb that most readers of this blog live in. Personal security forces and private guards have to deal with environments such as sparsely populated farmland, questionable urban environments and compromised environments such as concerts or the like. In any of these situations, an easily concealable but versatile device would fit the bill since you can't carry a SAW around all the time, nor do you want to.

Ever ridden a Barley? How 'bout a Harley Busa? {Autoblog}

Feb 19th 2008 10:07PM Speaking as an Italian rider ('71 Moto-Guzzi and '06 Vespa GTS), I can attest that just because it's fast does not mean it's the best sportbike.

Take that 'busa up in the Northern Arizona Mt. ranges and then take the 999 and see which one ends up actually going where you point it. The Hayabusa just does not cut that well. It's too big of a bike to really ride hard. You loose more time trying to control the power of the bike and wrestling it on the curve than you gain powering up in the straightaways.

I'll push my Piaggio (Which never happens) before buying a 'Busa.

Now, those new R6's are VERY nice midclass bikes...

Terror-stricken Dakar Rally heads to Central Europe, begins a new series {Autoblog}

Feb 8th 2008 11:06PM Damn. This just blows. This is NOT going to be "The Dakar". I mean, I understand keeping drivers (sorta) safe, but I can still be unhappy over the entire situation. While the risk of life IS the draw to the insane race across the continents, there's no need to risk driver's or crew's lives because of terrorism and not because of the rigors of the race.

Granted, I will be consoled if they'd just bring the TRUE style of racing to the Mojave Desert. I think a race from say, Las Vegas to Mexico City would be just as grueling:P That way I'd get to see it!

Val Kilmer to voice KITT, Will Arnett is out {Autoblog}

Feb 8th 2008 11:13AM William Daniels REALLY doesn't need the money, and he's probably been contacted already for the job and said no. Beyond "Boy Meets World" and "Knight Rider", Daniels has racked up 3 Tony awards and has royalty rights up the rear from a TON of 80's movies, TV shows and Broadway scripts and he's made a killing in producing off Broadway and Broadway shows.

So, with someone who's been in the industry this long, he's probably seen the guts of what's making this show work from the production end and probably decided that it's not a project worth investing in. That doesn't mark well in my book for how long the show will last.
