I use Photoshop a lot especially with plug ins but I could not afford to pay for it at its current cost. I don't use 3D Studio enough to warrant it's cost at all and free or less costly alternatives don't have the features or compatibility needed. Its not that I feel the developers of these apps aren't worthy of the pay they've earned. Quite the contrary.
In the case of freeware its a cost thing but also a utility thing. Most freeware I use regularly is in the utility category and from experience it seems those who aren't out to make a buck make the best little utilities.
As for shareware I have on occasion paid for software but mostly not. Depends on whether the added functionality registering gets me is felt to be worth it.
There is another category of software though. Office and OS software. My personal OS software is legit but I have no qualms about it not being that way. $400 is WAY too much to pay to be able to use your system the way you need. As for the office software Microsofts is the defacto standard and OEM's should come preloaded with it instead of some alternative or MS-lite. Again several hundred dollars is a bit much for your personal productivity.
Just my 2 cents
