Where did you look? It's not considered separate by the Chinese, but has a different government, rule of law, commercial set up, and national sports teams (who have to call themselves Chinese Taipei). So Taiwan!=China.
Seconded - The current Taiwanese regime was set up by the nationalist Kuomintang FLEEING the communists. This is nothing to do with excusable communism and everything to do with inexcusable capitalism. But would they have sold $100m in a year? Not likely!
Er... why is this not implausible? I find it hard to believe that anyone would price such a piece of junk so highly - hence the price is implausible. Cf the OED - also means outrageous, absurd, fanciful, preposterous - the price of thing is all of these.

what if you could churn these out cheap enough to give away - say $5-10. Marketing and PR people would go mad for them... So they become disposable media players.
Typical protectionist approach from Japan. And don't forget that Apple manufactures most of its kit in China - not Japan's favourite place either these days.

Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I am looking for a 12- or 13-inch ultraportable that can also play modern games at a reasonable level, for less than $1,000. I know the brainiacs out there can help me out. Love the site, thanks!"
