Two new Kindle models on the horizon? {Engadget}
Jul 16th 2008 11:03AM It's the integrated EVDO access that has made the Kindle such a success. You can take it with you on vacation and get access to plenty of new material (books, magazines, blogs, newspapers, etc) without the need to bring a laptop along to feed it material.
Integrated EVDO is probably the biggest single strength of this device over cheaper comparable e-readers.
iTunes activation servers go down, iPhone 3G customers being sent home unactivated, first-gen iPhone customers stuck with dead iPhones {Engadget}
Jul 11th 2008 1:18PM This is inexcusable on Apple's part. If MS screwed up this way we would be inundated with calls for Bill Gates head on a plate, yet people make excuse after excuse when Apple messes up this badly.
Drobo (second-gen) mini-review {Engadget}
Jul 10th 2008 1:36AM The drobo with its $500 price tag is definitely playing in NAS territory and I think a lot of people are rather amazed that the new version simply didn't integrate the Drobo Share functionality so that you can buy a single device and connect it ANYWHERE on your network.
The 1st generation of Drobo was lucky to see 30mbps read/write speeds so it is unlikely that the USB port is the limitation on speed of the Drobo. Drobo speed limitations are around the disk technology being utilized, use of software raid (CPU dependant) etc.

Jul 8th 2008 3:56PM Has anyone had success at using the Drobo as a backing store for a WHS box such as the HP EX470?
That's a solution that might interest me. As I understand it the WHS operating system drive management doesn't virtualize and pool storage down to the block level (as the Drobo does) so it wouldn't necessarily protect against data rot. I believe that in the case of the EX470 you are limited to using all drives of the same capacity if you use the internal caddy arrangement inside of the device.
If I'm wrong and someone can enlighten me I'd love to hear it.
Maybe with the Drobo SDK someone will develop a WHS add-in for the Drobo dash board with some management tools.
I should also point out one sour item with Drobo. The semi-official user forum "drobospace" now won't let you read or post in the forums unless you provide a valid serial number. That kind of closed mindedness is a real turn off to prospective customers like myself.

Dash Express gets big v2.1 June08 software update {Engadget}
Jun 30th 2008 5:05PM Really guys, it's ok. Many had the same things to say about cell phones doing email and other PDA type applications just a few years ago (many Palm users were outright abusive about how a phone could ever do what their PDA could do).
The reality is that storage and processor power in these devices is only going to improve every 12-18 months and that inevitably we will see "good enough" GPS for most users included in the phone as a $50 application purchase.
Most people would be simply delighted if an inexpensive purchase provided GPS with online integration right in their handset. For those willing to spend $250-$400 on a dedicated solution I'm sure that they will continue to exist for years.

Jun 30th 2008 1:42PM Sam,
You are talking about "what ifs" when we haven't even seen the cell phone based solutions that will materialize over the next 18 months.
Here's a "what if" for you. "What if" you can simply configure in your GPS software preferences that you don't want phone calls pre-empting your turn by turn directions when you are using the device for navigation? The caller could simply be sent to voicemail with a notice that you are driving and you will call them back when you are able. Or send them a text message with same.
Or.....
Ya, you get the point now.

Jun 30th 2008 1:40PM Many of us have cell phone chargers in our cars already. Certainly it is more convenient to take my phone out of my pocket, put it in a small dash mounted bracket, and use it for navigation as opposed to having to shuttle my large Garmin Nuvi around from car to car (which is what I have to do today).
Certainly dedicated GPS will continue to offer better routing features, etc, although in about 2 years any GPS that is not internet connected is going to feel like a dinosaur.

Jun 30th 2008 11:05AM I have to wonder if the Dash's days are numbered. The unit is huge and clunky. Certainly in a few years most of us will be using all-in-one devices like the Blackberry Bold or iPhone for not only telephone and media player uses but for navigation assistance as well.
The real money for Dash is to develop the Dash software to run on the iPhone, although an article did appear that indicates that this is strictly forbidden by Apple at this time. The only reason that I can think of is that Apple has its own turn-by-turn directions GPS in the works and doesn't want anyone competing with them.

May 29th 2008 5:11PM You are thinking of that prick Noel Lee from Monster Cable. If it was called the Monster Arm or the Noel Arm or had the words "monster" "cable" "noel" or "lee" in it then Monster would be suing them.
