Hands-on with the Vista Media Center TV Pack {Engadget HD}
Aug 6th 2008 1:56PM I don't understand the OEM only crap. I paid for Vista just like OEM builders did, why is my version less important?
Maybe it will be an Ultimate Extra, oh wait those don't exist.
The FIOS settop boxes already have more features than my MediaCenter software... and that is very very saddening to me.
Research affirms that DVR owners do indeed blaze by commercials {Engadget HD}
Aug 5th 2008 7:03PM I was "blazing" by commercials even before I had a DVR.
It was called changing the channel.
My parents still mute the TV every time a commercial comes on. Do they want to control our ability to change the volume durring ads too? Or change the channel, or even turn the TV off?
Imagine if magazines employed some sort of mechanical lock that stoped you from turning the page until you read the whole advertisement.
CableLabs loosens up on PC CableCARD tuner restrictions {Engadget HD}
Jul 22nd 2008 7:44PM I'm confused. I thought the ONLY reason for the OEM restriction was so they could be sure the DRM wasn't circumvented.
Without DRM, why is there still a need to lock it down to OEM systems?
Apple says turn-by-turn GPS coming to iPhone, copy / paste not a high priority {Engadget}
Jul 15th 2008 4:22PM I would love to see that "internal priority list of features".
I guess A2DP was below Cut & Paste on that list.
Fable 2 won't have heads-up display, pre-rendered cut scenes {Joystiq}
Jul 13th 2008 5:55PM I ended up playing most of Assasin's Creed with no HUD and found it to be a lot more fun (and harder) without it.
The audio cues were enough to alert me of danger off screen. And when health was low Altair would start to "desync" and the screen would get blurry, much more immersive than a health bar
Sessler constructively rants about Xbox Live bigots {Joystiq}
Jun 12th 2008 9:02PM I remember back when the original Halo was being developed (before MS bought up Bungie and ruined it for Mac users), they were getting flack for not including voice chat when games like Tribes were starting to.
One of the Bungie developers made a comment along the lines of "Once you combine anonymity with voice chat you're asking for trouble" and "Nobody wants to know they're being beaten by a 12 year old."
And that was like 10 years ago.
Glass keyboard concept opts for cameras instead of keys {Engadget}
Jun 12th 2008 3:35PM I don't think that picture works; the dog clearly succeeded in eating all of those Cheez-It's, he just didn't have an exit strategy. So it should say "Mission Accomplished", not "Fail".
wait ... wasn't there something about a keyboard ...
Screen Grabs: Colbert begs for iPhone 3G to replace upside down model {Engadget}
Jun 11th 2008 7:42AM Stupid Engadget.
Reporting on things people are interested in and want to comment on. What are they thinking?
Spore's system requirements {Joystiq}
Jun 10th 2008 11:41PM I can understand the need for an Intel based mac, but I'm surprised by the 10.5 requirement.
There are plenty of Intel macs that came with 10.4, and most people use the OS version that came with their Mac for the life of the computer.
That's an extra $130 to run Spore on a computer that already meets the hardware requirements.
Poll: What's the most annoying form of advertising? {Engadget HD}
Jun 7th 2008 10:20AM Do the networks really think that people actually watched all the commercials before DVR's were available.
My parents never watch a commercial, and they don't have a DVR.
When the break comes they either change the channel or mute the TV and read a magazine article.
(And why aren't magazine companies complaining about people turning the page before they read the entire ad?)
