TomTom developing iPhone GPS module? {Engadget}

Dec 12th 2007 10:46AM One more thing that TomTom (or other cellphone GPS system with maps on the device) has over GMaps is that you can make a call AND use the GPS to navigate since you can't have a GPRS/EDGE connection when you're on the phone.

TomTom developing iPhone GPS module? {Engadget}

Dec 12th 2007 8:47AM If you've never used TomTom and only Google Maps, you don't know what you're missing... The main two things are route recalculation and heading-up as opposed to north-up navigation. The triangulation feature that you mention is great as long as you don't mind the accuracy of a ~1700 yard diameter circle. I've been places where it has put me very close but the accuracy of a GPS with WAAS (~10 feet) is much better to navigate by.

The only thing Gmaps brings to the table is free current maps and free traffic.

BTW: the only thing that would be different in a route playback would be the flashing "DEMO" in the bottom right corner... this could simply be playing back a route and the picture was taken between the flashes.

Apple rumor roundup: iPhone discounts, early Leopard release, NAND-based laptops {Engadget}

Mar 7th 2007 2:52PM How do you know? There has been a handful of extremely brief reviews and no solid information on what the iPhone is and isn't capable of. I seriously doubt that the "It runs OSX" comment by Jobs means that it is a full desktop environment with real apps. More like a basic shell, a watered down Safari app and some java Widgets

Mar 7th 2007 2:14PM The Google Office apps need a full-featured browser to work, my Nokia N800 doesn't even handle most "web 2.0" websites and it has a fairly decent implementation of Opera and Flash 8.

Ear Scope turns wax removal into primetime entertainment {Engadget}

Mar 1st 2007 3:56PM CBMTTek: You could probably use it anywhere although I would think if you went rectally with it that would be the only place it would go from then on. Especially if you were hankering to check out your nose or mouth :)

Actually something like this would be fantastic for anything... I have a 'something" up on the inside of my nose (in that cavity right behind the tip) like an ingrown hair, plus I have a coupe errant hairs in my ears which make a "thwapping" noise that I'd like to pluck but can't see (obviously). Plus being able to look inside your own mouth would be much cooler than having the dentist do it for you (and trust he's honest in what he sees).

Microsoft's bumpin' Zune SUV disturbs the New York peace {Engadget}

Feb 26th 2007 12:21PM Too much coincidence for it not to be a viral marketing ploy. The "competition grade stereo" reference is on both websites and to be honest, if some ass was blasting his music in the middle of the night, I think the last thing I would consider would be how professionally installed his system was.

Crisis averted: CycloWiz now works with all Wii chipsets {Engadget}

Feb 13th 2007 3:43PM Huh... oddly enough I was researching this half an hour ago and was disappointed that there my Wii was too new for one of the current gen mod chips.

PS3 crime spree, part IV: the case of the missing console {Engadget}

Nov 29th 2006 11:59AM I just thought of something... If I'm not mistaken, shipping insurance doesn't cover items being sent to be repaired. Presumably since they are already broken. I don't know wether or not that is still policy (I recall reading some fine print years ago) and who the shipping company was (could have been UPS or Airborne, now DHL) but it's worth looking into.

Sony's VAIO R Master splits the tower {Engadget}

Oct 3rd 2006 8:48AM There was an IBM (cr)Aptiva that had an external CD-ROM and floppy in an enclosure that would pop up when you pushed on the front. Great industrial design, especially when paired with their monitor and display stand.

The cable went to a special purpose ISA card by way of a VERY thick cable and it worked fairly well aside from the fact that it just wasn't useful enough to catch on.

BTW: It was a nightmare to repair the drive enclosures since they weren't really repair-friendly.
