This makes as much sense as "RENTING is cheap - OWNING is expensive".

Especially when you compare 1 MONTH of rent vs 100% of the price of a house, paid in 1 lump sum.

Both business models are available. It's great as it gives options to the consumer. But it's a pretty weak angle as the main strategy to convert people from iTunes/iPod.

iTunes/iPod is more successful because software and hardware are perfectly integrated and easy to use. On top of that, design matters.

This NAS has a RAID controller to support RAID 5. So if you have a small office, I don't think that you are going to try and built that same box on your own to try and save $50. 4TB with RAID 5 for $999 and it works out of the box. That's a pretty good deal.
So the same weird shape as before? Can't stack them..

It does not look like they have air vents. I am wondering how hot they will get.
Looks like the RAID software manager is for Mac & PC.

You need to use this other WD drive for Scientific Atlanta 8300:

Works also with TiVo HD and Serie3. That's what I have.

See the difference:

There is a silver one (and 2 other colors) but it's a Passport Elite, not a Passport Essential

Can plug it on your xbox as a movie library.
Looks like all the new mybook drives are fan-less

Also it looks like this new drive has a 5 year warranty.
For NAS, WD has another product called My Book World Edition 1TB or 2TB - with 2 drives RAID 0/1.

Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I am looking for a 12- or 13-inch ultraportable that can also play modern games at a reasonable level, for less than $1,000. I know the brainiacs out there can help me out. Love the site, thanks!"
