Microsoft is already working on a fix, I'm sure... They haft to, unfortunately. They have contractual obligations to fix their DRM, otherwise there won't be any content available to strip. Labels give Napster/Urge/Rhapsody/Zune Marketplace a limited amount of time to fix DRM issues else they pull out completely, thus Napster/Urge/Rhapsody contractually obligate Microsoft to fix "said-issue". Same goes for Real & Rhapsody and Apple & iTunes.
Sorry, but Microsoft is required to fix the security issue, even if for some weird reason, they don't/didn't want to...
Believe me, I wish everything was EMI'ed... Labels are foolish, maybe someday they'll get the memo...
- I want Sony CONNECT to be merged into the PlayStation Store/Network. - A MUSIC purchase/subscription download service for both the PSP/PS3. - A MOVIE purchase/subscription download service for both the PSP/PS3. - Full access via a computer and via the PS3/PSP for purchasing/re-downloading content and account management.
These types of services have been promised, for about a year and 1/2, now. They should've already happend in hind-sight. I bought my PSP to be my Sony iPod and for web-browsing/TV watching. Thankfully Sony called the device a "Play(???)Station".
You all do know CONNECT is going to be re-born in the PlayStation Store, right?
Sony's not going to abandon this market. Only the CONNECT Name/Service.
I'm hoping that they keep customers purchase records and will be migrating them to whatever PlayStation Music Store, they're launching.
Perhaps E3 will tell us something.
I don't think OpenMG DRM/MagicGate & ATRAC3 need apply...
I'm fairly sure Sony is gonna learn from this and use AAC. (Though probably still DRM'ed and I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't MagicGate it.) If they use WMA, my jaw is gonna drop big time.
Though... It does seem awkward that the Mylo has Windows Media DRM 10 and the next PSP is rumored to include built-in memory, which potentially be used for subscription MSDRM, just like the Mylo does right now.
The only reason the PSP currently doesn't have MSDRM support, right now, is because Memory Sticks utilize MagicGate DRM, and not whatever security subset Secure Digital cards use. The only MS-DRM devices on the market that have flash memory expansion, utilize SD cards and nothing else... Not compact flash (no-drm) and not MMC (no-drm).
As far as I know, Windows Media DRM is only compatible with Secure Digital cards.
Sony WILL NOT drop Memory Sticks... I won't say never... But to many devices are built with it in mind, right now, including a crap-load of Sony R&D which has went into it, I'm sure.
Clock? Well, I know for a fact that the Creative Zen Xtra wasn't a DRM10 device when it was released, but Creative added it with a later firmware upgrade. I'm sure Apple can add a clock to existing iPods, even when they're in standby/sleep mode. It may take a bit more battery life to maintain, but I believe they can do it with most existing models, just fine. If and when they do release such a service, I'd be curious to see what device driver/protocol they use. Stick with Mass Storage or graduate to Media Transfer. As I recall Mass Storage couldn't handle subscription license management, least that was the reason I read... But who knows???
I'm counting on Sony to do something similar with CONNECT and PSP/PS3, at least someday.
I've always wondered why so many device manufacturers would or wanted to have compatibility with the iTunes Music Store, but never considered having AAC support already in place on most major devices. AAC isn't an issue in the cellphone market as most music playing phones include AAC support. Creative, RCA and I think Samsung only supported Microsoft's MTP protocal. My point being that it seems like some companies never really had any intention of working with anyone outside of the Microsoft universe of Windows Media Audio/Video. I think I can understand why Apple never supported Microsoft's MTP. They're (for the most part) an industry standard company and MSC is an industry standard protocal. So since most of those companies supported MTP, then they were a Windows Media only focus group. Though there are exceptions like Sandisk & Archos, which I think, supports both protocals, but not formats.
Thankfully, I put my money in Sony. And since Sony recently decided to support AAC natively on the PSP/PS3 and current line of Network Walkmans (MSC based devices), I'm set... Well as long as no one uses OGG.
There's always conversion of AAC to WMA or ATRAC3, though. And that one other evil format.
Well, now we know what DRM the PSP/PS3 will use for movie renting/purchasing. They've been working to get the DRM kinks out of that system for a while. I'd bet this is it.
1.Labels are probably behind the European countries wishing to do this.
2.I accept the notion that DRM isn't going away for just a while longer.
3.Until labels release music free of DRM, interoperability is key.
4.Why doesn't Apple just hand over management of FairPlay to companies like the evil DVD-CSS Macrovision, who's CEO has already offered to take responsibility, so they can be rid of the worries there-in and focus on user experience.
5.I'm glad Apple is being put under the microscope of anti-trust type concerns. In the future people may not want another iPod. Maybe someone from Creative or Sony will actually succeed in MP3 players someday, and that 250+ iTunes song purchaser may just want to throw their song on it without worrying about "burn-n-rip".
I apologize, I'm just very upset @ Sony Ericsson for not supporting Sony's own online music venture, CONNECT.
I have numerous (CD Player, PSP, 2 Network Walkmans) Sony products which support MagicGate/OpenMG and have like 130 purchases from Sony CONNECT in 132kbps and ATRAC3 I can't use, IF I ever obtianed a Sony Ericsson phone.
When my contract is up in November, I'd like a Walkman phone, but not if I can't playback my Sony CONNECT purchases.
SONY ERICSSON IS SONY!!! I DON'T CARE WHAT THEY SAY ABOUT THEM BEING DIFFERENT!!!
THEY USE THE WALKMAN BRAND AND THEY USE MEMORY STICKS!!!
THEY FOR SOME F'ING REASON DO NOT SUPPORT ATRAC3 NOR (MY DRM OF CHOICE) MAGICGATE WHICH IS INCLUDED IN EVERY MEMORY STICK PRO DUO SOLD, WHICH IS THEN USED IN EVERY SONY ERICSSON PHONE!!!
I AM SICK OF SONY ERICSSON NOT SUPPORTING SONY'S OWN MUSIC STORE, CONNECT!!!
"All of these new nettops have me intrigued. I'm looking for a small, quiet and cheap PC to replace my aging tower in my home office, and all it really needs to do is load Microsoft Office, check email and surf the web. Is there a particular nettop that's better (or a better value) than another? I know it's a rather new segment, but hopefully someone has taken a chance on one already. Thanks!"
