Probably-fake video of the PS3 slim surfaces {Engadget}
Jul 12th 2009 3:37PM I couldn't find any information about Sony operating any manufacturing plants in the Philippines, but if the PS3 is manufactured nearby at all (Malaysia is likely), I could see the following scenario occuring:
1. Test run of assemlbly process line for PS3 Slim is run at a Sony contractor plant in Malaysia.
2. A test run of 40 is made, and QC analyzes the units.
3. A problem is discovered, the units are stripped for reusable parts and the remaining shells are sent for disposal.
4. Some wiseguy at the plant "disposes" of the incomplete PS3 Slims... by secretly taking a bin of them to his contact at the docks in Kuantan's seedy district.
5. For maybe 1,000 Malaysian Ringgit (~300 USD) this guy's contact takes the bin of incomplete PS3s and loads it on a boat destined for the Philippines.
6. The PS3s are sold to street vendors at a decent margin, which are then sold to extremely gullible tourists at a really big margin.
7. Non-gullible, Engadget-reading tourist sees one and shoots a vid.
8. Engadget readers instantly conclude it's Photoshop.
Sony's connected BRAVIA HDTVs score Netflix streaming, PS3 left in the cold {Engadget}
Jul 9th 2009 11:10AM Microsoft's home console exclusivity agreement with Netflix can't have been more than 6 or at most 12 months. I think this is really just the usual problem of different parts of Sony doing their own things without communicating.
Howard Stringer needs to step in here, ask Kaz Hirai why there's no Netflix on the PS3 when it's already been announced for the TV division, and then Hirai needs to get his teams working.
And if cutting the price on the PS3 isn't in the cards just yet, adding value to it might be a good idea to try and sell a few more, no?

Jul 9th 2009 11:01AM As long as they're behind Microsoft in market share, they're not selling enough to rest on their laurels just yet.
And now I'm no MBA, but it seems to me that if you're not going to cut the price on a product, adding value to it might be a good alternative way to sell some more... So, uh, Sony?

Jul 9th 2009 10:58AM Well, no, the PS3 service isn't streaming. It's more like iTunes; you buy either a non-expiring license or a rental license to a downloaded movie.
Netflix would be quite different... and quite welcome.

Jun 12th 2009 4:00PM Y'know what the real difference is between bank CEOs (even the non-bailed out ones) and a CEO like Rubenstein?
The banks were paying their CEOs to make grander and grander illusions. Palm's paying their CEO to make awesomer and more useful stuff.
What Palm is doing is what American business should really be about.

Palm Pre already torn to shreds, estimated to cost $170 {Engadget}
Jun 6th 2009 4:17PM Wow... Think about it, you guys.
Palm is paying the fabricators in China $170.02 to build this thing and selling it to you for $199. They are making a mere $28.98 on each one out the door (though the subsidy from Sprint will boost that by a lot more). Still, that's $28.98 to pay for teams of hundreds of hardware and software engineers, designers, working extra hours for years to put together an amazing little device. Not a bad deal, I think.
As for Sprint... Indeed, they are just making bank on this.
