I've said it all along...why subscribe to TiVo when you can build your own DVR? It's cheaper in the long run...

Instead of digging its own grave, TiVo should learn from SlingMedia, provide a good quality product with no subscription fees.
TV crashing because of Windows?

It has happened.

I'm using Windows XP Media Center Edition for my DVR...wanna take a guess at the average crashes per month?

Forget about BeyondTV, SageTV, or even the open-sourced ('open-sore' as one of my colleague put it) MythTV...

Windows MCE is the UNDISPUTER KING of DVR software. It's way, way easier to install, configure, and use Windows MCE than any of the three mentioned earlier. Read: Why Windows MCE is King?

I'm not a paid Microsoft spokeman...but it seems like Windows MCE is the one thing that Microsoft got right.
I guess the more important question people are asking today is should one build a DVR or subscribe to TiVo?

And it just so happened that I did a Cost-Benefit Analysis on this topic not too long ago (http://technocratsoapbox.blogspot.com/2005/12/to-build-or-to-subscribe-dvr.html).

Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I just moved into a new apartment and have been reading about all of the new power strips out there, especially the green ones. I was wondering if you had any suggestions about which "green "power strips are out there with decent joules ratings. And when I say green, I mean power strips that have the remotes or switches to turn off all electricity flowing to certain plugs and with at least 2 plugs that are always on. I was looking specifically at sub $50 because I will need two, but if that is not possible I could be convinced otherwise. Thanks!"
