my bookie, I mean stock broker.
who are people who have never been in my kitchen?
I mostly agree :)

What I want to see is "stacks" like what leopard has, specifically the "grid" view. Essentially it would be a "folder" that opens when you click on it, and closes automaticalyl when you select something.

I think this can be done in a very "apple-style" and greatly improve the functionality of the home screen / launcher.

Ideally I would have "grids" or "stacks" for Games, Media, PIM/Productivity, Utilities... one for URLs and what would be really nice is to put a contact on my homescreen or in a stack/grid... so I can tap a homescreen icon to call a specific person, basically intermingling favorites with apps and homescreen urls.
1. ssh
2. voicecommand
3. slingplayer
4. pdanet

once I have these 4 things, the iphone will be perfect.

1. I want to be able to log into my unix boxes or macs. ssh is just plain useful to have, and frankly I was surprised it wasn't in the appstore at launch.

2. this is a program for windows mobile, and one of the few windows mobile apps that I actually liked. Basically it was a voice dialing app that required no "training", and in addition to calling contacts you could launch apps, check the time, and a number of other things... the iphone is desparately needing a propper voice app

3. I almost didn't get an iphone because of this.... anyone who has a slingbox and has ever controlled their tivo or DVD jukebox from their mobile phone will understand. This is the only app I really miss having moved to an iphone.

4. pdanet, by june fabrics, is an excellent tethering app for windows mobile or palmos that would be awesome to have on the iphone. If not this app, the ability to tether in general would be a huge value added.
Erica,

I couldn't agree with you more. I must be a relic because everyone is heralding the death of physical media but honestly, I like owning media with content that I can use where and when I wish (and on whatever device I want, but thats an entirely different rant).

In my living room the number of ways to rent movies has increased dramatically; my tivo with amazon's unbox, my xbox and xbox live's movie marketplace, my appleTV with iTUnes movie rentals. Despite this plethora of options, I still went out and bought a copy of Independence Day on Bluray last week... I find that I will only rent content that I am unfamiliar with... my recent rental of the movie "Hot Fuzz" for example. The problem arises when I enjoy a movie, and decide I want to own it, if the major studios were smart they would issue every digital rental a coupon code that can be applied to an actual media purchase of the same content. Despite what the major analysts and market experts are saying, I don't see physical media dying anytime soon... I mean a bookshelf with 500 DVDs on it is more appealing, to some, than a little white box plugged into my TV that can hold 5 or 500 movies. The two are NOT mutually exclusive.

I find when I want to watch something it's easier for my wife or I to pick something from the shelf than to traverse a menu on my TV.... but in some cases, traversing the menu is preferable, I think there is room enough in the market for both, and the sooner the studios and the digital content distributors realize that, the better.

Additionally I would like to say that this view applies to ebooks / real books as well as movies and music.

Eric,

I appreciate your comment, but the Sony e-book reader, also using similar technology does indeed offer a reverse video mode.

I get what you are saying about reflective versus radiative surfaces, but there is still an advantage for people with some vision problems to read white text against a black background.

This is an important question, for me... does the kindle support a reverse video mode? is it possible to read white text on a black background???

If so, some photos of wehat the display looks like in that mode would be greatly appreciated.

--Jeff
If anyone installs this on an n800/n810 I would be very curious to know if the palmOS version of the slinplayer client would work on it.

I am in total agreement with everything you listed. Just in case you didn't know, v1.1.1 firmware added support for TV out to the iphone.
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
