there's a reason for that. microsoft was having serious production issues for several months that severely affected the number of consoles they could produce. the reason why it was hard to find them on shelves until March '06 wasn't because of high demand, but because of extremely low supply. there was demand for it, but it wasn't as big as you think.

Sony did have production issues, but they seem to have gotten past them already.
nice post nick. i think it makes a lot of sense. i just get so tired of reading all of these ridiculous posts from folks bashing sony and predicting all sorts of doom and gloom. the PS2 is still the biggest seller out there game wise. so when it comes time for all of these ps2 owners to jump on to the next-gen bandwagon, do we really think that they're all going to just go to a different console just because the PS3 is too expensive? i personally think that they'll see the backwards compatibility as an asset to the PS3 and equate it as definite value. but the point is, making crazy predictions at this point is rather baseless. we won't know much until a year from now.

with the growth of videogame industry as it is, i truly believe that there's room for more than one "winner". as an owner of all 3 next-gen consoles, i'm starting to truly buy-in to the marketing put down by nintendo that the Wii isn't competing against the 360 and the PS3, rather it exists in a different sub-segment of videogaming than the other two. why? because the best games for the Wii won't relate well to being really good games on the PS3 and 360 (and vice-versa).

its going to be a very slow january and february for all of the consoles, but there are going to be some killer games coming out for all 3 this year. so lets give it a year and see how things go.
easy. you can use both ports at the same time. just because you're using HDMI for video doesn't mean you can't also be using the muli-AV port for just audio. this is pretty much a fargone conclusion. i'm sure you could use the analog plugs too.
very true JJ. judging anything right now is silly. give it a year. see what next christmas shopping season is like and then you'll get a good idea as to how things are shaping up. if sony can put out some killer apps this year and maybe lower the price too, sony should do well next x-mas. it doesn't matter to sony how well the wii does. the same games on both consoles will always be better on the ps3 which is why the wii is much better off with unique titles.

Sorry dude, but most of the problems won't be fixed. The PS3 uses hardware to run PS2 games, and firmware updates cannot fix hardware problems! Firmware updates can only fix software."

dude... do you even know what firmware is???? obviously not. firmware controls hardware. software runs on hardware. firmware is a form of software, but believe me, they can fix it with a firmware update. its not that hard to do. it will happen. the scaling problem i'm sure will be fixed in the future too and i could care less about it anyway, i don't have an old hdtv that can't scale so what do i care? any new tv's can also scale so what difference does it make??
some of you actually think that you can judge how well a console will fare based upon the first month and a half after its launch??? if you actually think that, you need to find a new hobby... seriously.... the launch means very very little. the xbox 360 had a very good launch despite MS having way way too few consoles available (barely more than sony had at launch), yet people kept contending that it was all a mirage until the ps3 came out. what now everyone is changing their tune???

if you think you can actually predict whats going to happen, you really need to start a career in sports gambling because there's some serious good money there and my prognostication skills just aren't as good as yours then. please......

you wanna know what the best selling home console is? you wanna know what system sells more games than anything else? it happens to be the system that is also the oldest and most technically inferior. that's right, its the Playstation 2. as old as it is, its still the king even after all of these new console releases. remember that before you declare the fate of the world and future and everything...
i just got a ps3 on tuesday at my local gamestop. otherwise i've had a rather hard time finding them locally, but haven't been trying hard as much lately, but still haven't seen them in stock many places.

the PS3 has one killer game: Resistance. the Wii has one killer game: Zelda. but the wii has a few pretty good games too like Wii sports (i'm wondering how long until the novelty wears off though.....), Rayman, ExciteTruck, etc. the PS3 also has some good games too, though most of them are not exclusive. so you've got the multiple capabilities of the PS3 beyond just a gaming system and the uniqueness of the Wii. the Wii is certainly gaining a lot of attention due to its excellent price and approachability, but its hard to say what will happen from here.

now i'm an adult that can actually afford things, so cost is not as much of a factor, but i find both the Wii and the PS3 to be good bargains. Why? well the wii is only $250 and it comes with a free game. pretty sweet deal, however to take full advantage with friends you have to spend an additional $180 in controllers!! wow! that wii just got expensive! the PS3 on the otherhand serves 3 purposes. it will handle all the new games, its a High Definition Movie player (bluray disc player) and it will also play PS2 and PS1 games (though not very well right now, it needs a firmware update to fix some issues right now). for someone that doesn't have a PS2 currently and who also love movies in high definition for his 50" HDTV, that's not a bad deal at all. I could buy a cheap PS2 and an HD-DVD player and it would still be way way more than just a PS3 all by itself that can do all of that and more.

different perspectives.... its all good. ;)
sorry... only 3 layers.. i thought there was a 4th layer in there for something else, but its just mainly 3 layers. my mistake. regardless, it still only gets you really sharp and accurate 4.7 megapixel images.
your writeup is a bit misleading when you refer to the "(probably unnecessary) 14 megapixel Foveon X3 sensor". you need to understand the Foveon sensor before making assumptions about it. even though it is a 14 megapixel sensor, it does not output 14 megapixel files. the 14 megapixels are spread across 4 layers (as opposed to one layer in a traditional sensor), thus it only outputs 4.7 megapixel files. so think of it as a very very accurate 4.7 megapixel camera, and then you realize that the 14 megapixel sensor is not only necessary, but its very possibly rather inadequate for professional use.
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I'm pretty much a complete noob when it comes to camera stuff. My wife loves to take pictures, though. So much so that she literally wore out her first point and shoot camera, and the Kodak Z712 I bought for her less than two years ago is starting to act up as well. To compound the matter, we are expecting our first born sometime next year. I fear the Kodak just isn't going to cut it any longer. What would be the best starter DSLR to get? She hates missing photo opportunities due to camera 'lag' so speed would definitely be at the top of the list. Photo quality and features would be next. Price should be no more than $800. I'm not interested in video capabilities."
