>Why do people want something like this? What is the >appeal? Or is it just a stupid gimick?

I saw a demo of a prototype Philips system that had lights placed all over the room, kind of like a 5.1 setup, but with lights. Also the color and intensity of each light had been specifically programmed to match the movie, like an additional sound track. They played the start of Final Fantasy the Spirits Within, and having all of the ambient light in the room change in perfect synchronization with the movie was unbelievably cool. It's the kind of thing you have to experience before you realize how incredibly immersive it is. I hope more companies start selling ambient lights for home theaters.
>now, where can i find a sub-1000$ HDTV projector

If you are looking for a sub $1000 HDTV projector, I've been using the infocus screenplay 5000 which has a 1280x720 LCD, and costs around $999 with a rebate. I've been using it for 5 months and I love it. Only bad part is the cost of the lamps, $319 at newegg for a 2000 hour lamp.
>unless you count light shining through an LCD chip and
>hitting your TV screen "analog conversion"

I am pretty sure the path between my retina and visual cortex could be considered analog as well :)

If the HD DVD drive doesn't display full resolution movies, why would any informed customer actually by it?
>4. Can someone explain WHY Tivo has been so reluctant to >bring Tivo2go support to mac?

Probably because it isn't worth investing the same amount of work for only a fraction of their customers.

Also, the number of TiVo mac users will likely decline even further when apple releases a home media center. I know I am going to switch from TiVo to apple once that happens.
They are just pissed that the OLPC also happens to be "one AMD processor per child." Also, if the machines are going to run Windows applications, they are going to have to have a copy of Windows. That costs $100 all by itself.
It's fine if they want to charge $800, but then they had better offer a life time subscription. Otherwise, I am simply not going to buy a series 3. And I say that as someone who has been evangelizing the greatness of TiVo for 5 years, and has previously owned series 1, 2 and direcTV tivos
Nicholas Negroponte described the design as a theft deterrent, saying "no one steals a mail truck." The idea is that if one shows up in a place it doesn't belong, it is immediately obvious to everyone that someone has stolen from a child.
I, like everyone else, am extremely disappointed by this announcement. There was no reason for them to build up hype by announcing that they were going to announce something, only to let this be the big "initiative."

I want a cable card DVR! Let's hope apple releases one at their anniversary event.
#9 "I'm looking at the second picture right now and wondering where can i get the same black pad for my keyboard and mouse?"

All the furniture/extra stuff in those pictures is from Ikea, that's the "original desk pad, curved" http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?topcategoryId=15600&catalogId=10103&storeId=12&productId=49657&langId=-1&parentCats=15600*15774*15781
I recently upgraded a lot of equipment and now have an LCD TV with 1 HDMI input, a projector that has 1 HDMI input, and a receiver with 2 HDMI inputs. However, it isn't clear if any of these devices support the latest and greatest HDCP. I wouldn't be surprised if when the PS3 comes out, I will plug its HDMI cable in (to a wide variety of things) only to get error dialog boxes accusing me of trying to steal content.

"I'm in the market for a new phone and money isn't a limitation. I'm also not partial to any particular US carrier, but here are some of the features I'd like to have: WiFi, GPS, good coverage in lots of places, push Gmail (a must!), physical keyboard (a must!), a touchscreen, decent battery life and a relatively slim body. And please, nothing that has a fruit logo on it. No offense to the fruit fans, though. Thanks!"
