Sony VAIO Z-series vs. MacBook Air: fight! {Engadget}

Jul 16th 2008 11:33AM The sony is the weight and cost of an air, but almost twice the volume - it's about the size of the regular macbook. There are better computers to compare it against.

Sony: 12.4 x 0.96-1.3 x 8.3
volume = 116 cubic inches
mass = 3.3 lbs

Macbook: 12.78 x 8.92 x 1.08
volume = 123 cubic inches
mass = 5 lbs

MBA volume = ~65 cubic inches (conservative estimate; it's curvy so it's hard to measure)
mass = 3 lbs

Are you having problems with iPhone 2.0? {Engadget}

Jul 10th 2008 11:54PM I've installed a bunch of apps and it's been fine... so my advice would be to restart only if there's a problem.

Drobo gets dev community and SDK beta: run UPnP, BitTorrent, and any other servers you want {Engadget}

Jul 2nd 2008 8:59PM Chaz - The TS-409 isn't cheap, either - in fact, it's $100 more than the drobo ($599 vs $499 bare). It has the built-in ethernet (which I wish the drobo had), but my wireless also connects to USB drives.

The drobo is much more flexible with drive configurations, which will save money in the long run because I can buy whatever drive is the cheapest per GB at the time I need it.

SSDs save battery power, right? Wrong. {Engadget}

Jul 1st 2008 5:10PM Actually, temperature is related to power consumption because that's where the all the heat comes from - so a lower power HDD would be cooler than a SSD that takes more average power. But, add mechanical durability to the list of SSD advantages.

AT&T announces iPhone 3G pricing plans {Engadget}

Jul 1st 2008 5:02PM Bender - you're right on the obnoxious upgrade fees. It's always cheaper to just cancel - you'll save $43 to $98 dollars.

The maximum termination fee is $175, and it goes down $5 every month... so, if you've just missed the 7/11 deadline, you can pay $120 to cancel (after 11 months) instead of the $218 fee.

iPhone 2.0 software securely erases user data {Engadget}

Jun 25th 2008 7:19PM It's not fake. You obviously don't know anyone with the 2.0 firmware.

iPhone 2.0 software securely erases user data {Engadget}

Jun 25th 2008 7:16PM That sounds like a long time. It takes ~2ms to erase a block (16KB). The iphone has 8 memory chips (in 2 packages), so theoretically that could be done in a little over 2 minutes. But, they probably don't have the chips wired to erase in parallel, so one erase pass would be 18 minutes minimum. Add in overhead for the CPU (which shouldn't be much since it's only takes a couple of bytes to send the erase command), and it's still not an hour. It probably takes longer to erase a MLC chip, and my example numbers are SLC... either that, or they're writing multiple passes, which is cool.

Apple's iPhone 3G to go on sale at 8:00AM on July 11th? {Engadget}

Jun 24th 2008 1:53PM Luke D... I know you mean well, but your joking about girls in engineering perpetuates the stereotype that keeps girls out of engineering.

Now, excuse me, I've got to try out my tutu for some man-ballet ;-)

Orange's recharge Pod tent to keep mobiles juiced at Glastonbury {Engadget}

Jun 16th 2008 1:19PM ... or if they aimed all the existing cells at the sun. I guess if the continental plate suddenly drifted south of the equator, then those north-facing cells might come in handy.

Still a moot point... the festival has been rainy the last 5 years:
