iPhone activation servers back online; stock updates from around the world {Engadget}

Jul 11th 2008 6:03PM AT&T store on Boylston is sold out. Apple store still has stock but there's a huge line, maybe 100-125 people. It's going around the block.

Hands-on with Sigma's DP1 {Engadget}

Feb 1st 2008 9:55AM I think this is a great idea, but a 28mm (35 equiv) is too wide and f/4 a tad slow. Also, apparently the ISO only goes up to 800. So this will be great for sunny days, less so for anything else.

MacBook Pro 12-inch ultraportable rumor resurfaces {Engadget}

Jul 11th 2007 11:49AM I've been on the fence about buying one of the old 12" powerbooks on fleabay. For what they are going for (600-700), it's tough to beat for a small mac laptop. But maybe I'll hold out. What I really want is the modern version of the old duo - very small, 10" screen maybe. Something ultra portable.

iPhone rate plans revealed, at-home activation announced {Engadget}

Jun 26th 2007 11:02AM Yeah, the sidekick is the best deal going in data, I think. For ~$70 month I'm totally covered for voice and data. I'm really tempted by the iPhone, but the lack of IM is a big drawback for me.

PSP2 probably is or isn't coming -- maybe {Engadget}

Mar 14th 2007 9:54AM I only really care about one design issue on the psp. Dual sticks. As a fps fan, control is a serious, frustrating issue. The lack of two sticks just boggles my mind, especially if their target market isn't the young and old. The only other thing that bothers me is the inability to use an external keyboard. Seems like a glaring miss given some of it's capabilities. But overall I think it's a cool media/gaming device that just hasn't had the support from developers.

I pretty my stick to my DS for everything other than fps. I enjoy the origianl, creative games for the DS (elite beat and trauma center come to mind).

Mar 9th 2007 10:03AM Olivier,
I agree about crop factor and DoF. But I was talking more about pixel count than crop factor, which doesn't really affect DoF, I think. A 1.6 sensor like on the canon 30D has less DoF than full frame sensors of the Mark I,II's and 5D. It's a complicated math thing on why (and I don't fully understand why), just that it is what it is. SO a 14 megapixel 1.6 sensor will still have less DoF than an 8 megapixel FF sensor.

And I definitely agree that an F/4 lens is subpar for a camera with the rest of specs.

But I'd like to get my hands on one of these and see what the output is like. They're supposed to be amazing.

Mar 9th 2007 9:43AM Olivier: I don't think the megapixel count and f-stop have any relation to each other or is in any way gimmicky. On a sunny day, f/4 is great and I bet it takes amazing pictures. Lower light situations may suffer, unless it's got a great sensor and noise reduction. But sensor size and lens speed don't correlate together.

I read somewhere that fovean sensor works differently than other sensors. Read here for an explanation: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sigmasd10/

Mar 9th 2007 9:38AM I agree. F/4 is way too slow for a camera with these specs. It does have a fully manual mode which is nice, shoots RAW, and the rest of the specs look pretty good. I'm digging the rangefinder-esque design as well, especially if you add the optical viewfinder. But really, I'd rather have an f/2-ish lens, especially if you like shallow depth of field.

Samsung outdoes itself with Ultra Smart F700 {Engadget}

Feb 8th 2007 8:59AM A 5 megapixel camera doesn't mean anything if it still takes crappy pictures. Since when has the # of megapixels meant anything. If it is a good lens, then it will be sweet.

And this whole whiney iPhone comparison is sooo 1996.
