Anaheim-Vegas maglev train project gets $45 million infusion {Engadget}
Jun 8th 2008 12:48PM Yeah the government funding public transportation from Disney to Vegas is about par for the course. Meaning that it's laughable.
iPhone firmware 2.0 adds Chinese handwriting recognition, Newton sweats {Engadget}
May 5th 2008 5:00PM I don't see how this can work well without a stylus but maybe that's just my doltish fingers. On the other hand, I have seen this idea working well with a stylus before. In china the big smartphone there 2 years or so ago was the Moto Ming which did this exact thing except it also translated. The screen was very similar - I could draw something in English and it would generate the characters and my agent could draw something in Chinese and get the english word. It's biz card picture taking import thing also worked surprisingly well.
Papyrus e-book concept takes aim at students {Engadget}

Sounds great!
>but the designers don't appear to have any presumptions about it actually getting made,
There is a catch? Shocker! Sorry but I find this type of thing is useless. They basically came up with a best case scenario, which where every design begins, but didn't connect it to reality at all. Why even post about it? I don't see a single thing in the "proposal" that would address how this would actually be feasible. johnny5's comment actual contains more ideas in that regard. It is easy to "aim high", (the best part is, "with handwriting recognition, it seems" I mean sure, why not!?) when you don't have the pesky limitations of technological and manufacturing reality to deal with. Too bad they didn't give it 120 hour battery life. That would have been something.

Is the unit making its way out the door? I've been waiting for weeks. But I'm disappointed that there is no zoom in 720p. The TZ5 might be the one after all.
Nokia readies iPhone-ish "Tube," disses Apple's sales {Engadget}
Apr 8th 2008 2:11AM Wow could it be that there is someone as dismissive of Apple as Steve is of everyone else? Looking forward to the smug off!
(Isn't all candy bars. Last I heard they had sold 7 million N95s over the last year.)
iPhone software development to be locked down by Apple? {Engadget}
Feb 29th 2008 12:31PM >prepare to be letdown in a major way.
Sorry but to anyone who has actually been paying attention it is hard to be let down by this simply because it isn't surprising in the least. In fact, it is funny that there is even a question mark in your headline.
Touchpad turns your iPhone into a remote trackpad {Engadget}
Feb 21st 2008 7:51AM As mentioned Salling Clicker already does this but for tons of phones - both WinMo and Symbian and, if you choose, over wi fi. But what I love is the inventor's "just like on a regular touchpad" comment. It would be great if people were using their genius to create things that don't already exist rather than just emulating those that do....but with an iPhone!

Feb 13th 2008 12:03PM It really amazing how Apple frames a debate. Sharp, Sony and Toshiba (and not Lenovo) have produced or are currently producing lappies within .03" or so of the Air but somehow that .02" is the paramount "feature" over function. Personally the Air is a letdown because I'd like OS X on some of the long overseas trips I take for work. That use, rather than as conversation starter at the coffee shop 3 blocks away is where ultra portability comes into play for me. However, it is massively ill suited to that task because of the non removable battery and lack not only of an Ethernet port (good luck getting room wifi in hotel in china outside HK, Shanghai or Beijing) but, for closer trips, an option for built in 3G. I know it worked great for iPods but "thinner!" doesn't mean cutting edge to me. If I was itching to store my laptops in manila envelopes it might be a different story.
Microsoft already trimming Windows 7 features, DirectX 11 on the outs? {Engadget}
Feb 9th 2008 7:01PM >DirectX 10 requirements of Vista were enough of that sort of trouble for one decade.
Um what are those requirements exactly? A DX 10 card isn't required to run vista and many games run faster under DX 9 on Vista than 10. What seems to be starting early is FUD.
