The NetShare debacle: Apple, explain yourself {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Aug 5th 2008 12:08AM That's the rub. I don't approve of Apple's behavior, but I sure as hell don't want to use Windows. Or Linux. How do I protest?

TUAW Responds: iPhone LoJack {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Feb 21st 2008 5:06PM With a little bit of ingenuity, a website could be created to say if the phone was actually stolen, and have the phone update only if the page says to. If it says the phone is stolen, a photo could be taken at a set interval and uploaded, along with specifying the location, in hopes that you could snag a pic of the thief.

Keeping your screen clean {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Jan 11th 2008 11:46PM This guy that you may have heard of said his piece on this subject. I trust him. So, I follow his instructions:

A half dozen fun undocumented iPhone preferences {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Nov 27th 2007 5:15PM I had to do something like this, since my paths were not all set.

/private/var/root/bin/plutil -v YES -s SBUseNewDock /private/var/root/Library/Preferences/com.apple.springboard.plist

For me, this changed the height of the dock and added reflections. Using SummerBoard, on the Touch theme, the white line disappeared. Using the default theme, it looks a little odd. It isn't the dark gradient like on the iPod Touch. It's still the "drilled metal" looking dock, just shorter. So, this doesn't change the dock image, just makes it shorter with reflections. Whatever image is set, it continues to use (on SummberBoard, anyway).

However, the reflections are actually rendered from the icon, not from some pre-defined icon set like they are in the Touch theme for SummerBoard, which is nice to know.

What iPhone apps do you want to see? {Engadget}

Oct 17th 2007 12:31PM MMS.app
BlueToothFileTransfer.app
iChat.app
HorizontalAndVerticalSMS.app
VoiceDialer.app
VoiceCommands.app
VoiceToTextSoICanTextWithoutLookingAtMyButtonlessKeyboard.app

And if anyone has time: SSH.app

The main problem I have with the iPhone (ignoring all the little things like BT Transfer, and crappy looking photo attachment on e-mails) is that it is a stationary device. You HAVE to be engaged with the device to use it (you HAVE to stare at it to type and navigate), which takes your concentration away from everything else. If they could solve that problem, it'd be a much better device.

Motorola: give us the F3 {Engadget Mobile}

Sep 30th 2007 4:14PM Woot! I've been wanting one of these since the first time I heard about them. I didn't know they had US bands! And I definitely didn't know I could buy one on Tiger Direct. Thanks a million. Buying one right now.

Some potential rotary news for you rotorheads {Autoblog Green}

Sep 19th 2007 8:12PM @rgseidl

My only guess is he means the Variable Fresh Air Duct (VFAD), which is vacuum controlled and not not really valve. It just opens another hole in the cold air intake (in the top of the bumper). Some thought it was for resonance tuning but were found to be wrong later.

I also don't recall anyone on RX-8 Club finding that it made a big difference in economy ay 3,400 RPM and 3,600 RPM (which is where I remember reading the valve opened), outside of the fact that higher RPM = lower fuel consumption in general. Could be wrong about that, though. I haven't done my own testing.

Mac 101: change keyboard modifier keys with a Windows keyboard {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Sep 14th 2007 11:21AM @Paul

I recently grabbed that script and modified it. The problem I had with it was that the author changed all the modifier keys back to defaults. I personally am sick of the caps lock key. So, I disable it. When the script resets to default, it turns the caps lock key back on.

In addition to changing the delay to .1 to speed the script up, I replaced:

else
-- We're in PC keyboard mode. Swap back to the defaults
click button "Restore Defaults"
end if

with:

-- We're in PC keyboard mode. Swap back to the defaults
click pop up button 3
click menu item 3 of menu 1 of pop up button 3
delay 0.1
click pop up button 4
click menu item 4 of menu 1 of pop up button 4
delay 0.1

I run this script when I login. When I'm at work, I've already plugged in my eternal keyboad, mouse, and monitor. Nothing fancy, but it works.

The only bug I've found is that if you have been playing with the system prefs and don't have the "Keyboard & Mouse" tab open when you quit, the script errors out. For whatever reason, it doesn't swap to the correct tab before continuing, or AppleScript doesn't do the "tell" correctly. I'm not sure, since I don't know AppleScript well. So, make sure you click back to the correct tab before closing system prefs.

I also popped off my alt key and windows key and swapped them to make it a little more Mac-like.
