Interesting. In British Columbia, Canada, they've already done something like this. Like in France, it was wildly unpopular, and nearly caused the party who introduced it to lose power when elections were held recently. I quite frankly think it's an excellent idea, especially here, as gas is far too cheap in my opinion, especially when you compare it to world prices. Although an increase in the price of gasoline may hurt some people initially, in the long run it will force a beneficial change in habits, and hopefully allow governments (through increased tax revenue) to invest in the growth of the rapid transit infrastructure and other green methods of transportation.
