May 2nd 2008 9:54PM QUESTION: Can the raw video be imported directly into iMovie HD ('06) and Final Cut Express?
I have a Xacti HD700 and really like it, but the video needs to be converted before it can be used in FCE, but works fine in iMovie HD.
And, the video quality from the HD700 in outdoor conditions, especially sunny, is great. Indoors, it gets worse rapidly.
Video: Urinal Elephants invade Japan {Engadget}
Apr 22nd 2008 9:51AM A big-ass robotic elephant cleaning up the urinals while I'm using one nearby would make me feel more at ease than the usual middle-aged to senior women one often finds cleaning them while they are in operation. (yes, women are in the men's room while men use them, can't see how that can't be viewed as entrapment!)
Sony's 3.5- and 11-inch OLEDs are just 0.008- and 0.012-inches thin {Engadget}
Apr 16th 2008 10:42PM Yes, very thin screen, but what about its base stand? I've seen the XEL-1 in person and its screen is also very thin, but it's connected to relatively huge base stand. So even though the screen is incredibly thin, its footprint is actually relatively large.

Apr 10th 2008 3:19AM I miss having category links in each post, I used to use those a lot to catch up on a particular topic. And I think the breaking news list should be shorter like it was before and most importantly include photos like it did before.
I find the sliding photo thing on the right to be a bit distracting.

Apr 5th 2008 10:21PM I've used a single Lacie drive for the past 3 years, with no problems at all, very solid. It's a 300GB Firewire 400/800 Pro drive. Just bought a Porsche designed one recently and so far so good with that.
However, a friend has said his Lacie drive wasn't so good.
I trust Lacie however, especially for Macs. It's just a "feeling."

Apr 5th 2008 10:18PM I bought the 500GB version of this drive about a month ago, but returned it. The power brick "buzzes" nonstop, even when the drive is turned off. In normal daytime, it's hard to hear (I live on a busy street in Tokyo), but at night when things are quiet, the noise was loud enough to keep me awake.
It's almost impossible to return things in Tokyo stores, so I asked for another drive, but first wanted to check if the power brick buzzed also. It did. So I fought and got my money back.
I've been using a professional Quadra Lacie drive for years, and it's very good. I looked at the connector for its power brick and it was quite different. So not wanting to spend the money for a Quadra drive just for a Time Machine drive, I got a Porsche designed one since it had the same type of power adapter, and sure enough its power brick doesn't buzz.
I'd be curious to know if anyone else's power brick buzzes?

Mar 19th 2008 12:41PM Just last month I got the Xacti HD700. It was on sale here in Tokyo for ¥42,000, but I saw just yesterday the price jumped back up to ¥62,000. Maybe it's to make room for this new model.
Office 2008's first update is for updating the updater {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Mar 3rd 2008 1:09AM I've been using Entourage 2008 for about 3 weeks now and totally no problems. Not a single crash or freeze-up of any kind, and I even use a custom e-mail notification sound (Scully asking Mulder, "Mulder. Yeah? What's that in your pocket?")
I don't have any other Office 2008 apps installed though, scared of compatibility issues still. I am a proofreader and don't want to have to worry about that kind of stuff while working on a deadline.
I do wish the gray DAY bars in the inbox weren't so huge. Good thing I upgraded to a 24" monitor recently as my Powerbook's screen alone would have been able to only show like 6 messages at once.
Oh yes, the Apple store is down {Engadget}
Feb 26th 2008 7:25AM Umm, if you lived on the other side of the world, like I do in Tokyo, then you'd actually be getting the news 14 hours later (by the clock with respect to U.S. EST). It's 9:24pm right now on Tuesday.
Japan store is down as well, which means it's something every country can get, so I guess it can't be just iPhone related.
