Ricoh erecting 47 x 126-foot solar and wind-powered billboard in Times Square {Engadget}

Jul 3rd 2008 1:59PM So what you're saying is it will fit in perfectly in Times Square.

AT&T moves HQ to Dallas from San Antonio {Engadget}

Jun 28th 2008 12:55AM Yeah, AT&T doesn't employ anyone in their Bridgeton NOC and Depot.

This is actually a good move for AT&T, getting out of that little town and into a real city.

Sharp solar panels to be used in two Japanese mega plants {Engadget}

Jun 25th 2008 12:17AM When I read 46M, my first thought was -- that's actually quite reasonable.

According to this website: http://nuclearinfo.net/Nuclearpower/WebHomeCostOfNuclearPower, which may be reliable, Nuclear power can cost $1000 per KW to construct.

The above Japanese plants produce 28,000 KW, which means that if they went nuclear, it would cost $28M. So $46M for a safe, super clean renewable energy source, while certainly a premium, isn't that bad at all. Also, note that the nuclear plant would probably have significant issues building on a landfill waste island. I wouldn't want to be near the reactor while the landfill is settling.

Blackberry Kickstart can't avoid paps, gets photographed yet again {Engadget}

Jun 24th 2008 2:49AM "ungainly beast"???

It's a flip phone -- what do you want it to look like when it's flipped out. Any smaller and you'd complain about it's tiny screen and cramped keyboard. Yeesh!

I think that phones in general have come to their smallest possible size. Anything smaller (that requires traditional input like keys and screens) is just not going to cut it. Aside from thinness, we really need to stop comparing phones like this. Sturdiness should be a category.

Yes, I admit it, I am a huge BB fan boy. I can't wait to get the Bold or the Thunder.

TomTom already has iPhone navigation software ready to roll {Engadget}

Jun 9th 2008 5:48PM Personally, I'm not a fan of the iPhone, but I have to say, it makes a lot of sense that the price of data is going up. When you transition from a EDGE device to a 3G device, you need to pay more monthly for that privilege. Face it, AT&T has spent tens of millions of dollars upgrading their network for this device to be ready and they need to reap the rewards by upping the data plan.

Study secretly tracked 100,000 cellphone users' locations {Engadget}

Jun 5th 2008 12:13AM Kind of stupid to get outraged at this kind of stuff - it was anonymous - the local laws allowed it. The people weren't informed, but in their contract/legal system they forfeit that right when they carry a cell phone. What's the problem?

This is the same as having a person follow another person for that period of time, but a lot less expensive in terms of man hours. I'm allowed to follow you around as long as you're mostly in public spaces, and this study only tracked people to the nearest mile or so.

Sony's Hot Ticket program brings live events to theaters at $20 a pop {Engadget}

May 22nd 2008 12:02PM The Red Sox have been doing this with Showcase Cinemas for a few years. They charge some nominal fee ($7-10, I'm not sure) They then broadcast the game in HD and pack the place and they get aisle vendors to come in to sell concessions. The crowds are nuts. It's the only time that you can find a full movie theaters these days.

Of course, it helps that tickets to the actual games are pretty expensive ($20-$150 per seat) and you can't even get them unless you're very lucky.

Volkswagen to produce 1-Liter car in 2010, should get over 200MPG {Engadget}

May 9th 2008 9:41AM Why do companies like VW even waste their time on this kind of concept? Isn't it well proven that with a aerodynamic design, tiny engine and light weight materials you can get 200+ MPG? We need usable cars that can get to 100, 200, 300 MPG, not underpowered sportster styled cars.

If, however, this is a stepping stone for bigger and better and more fuel efficient designs from VW, I'm all for it. But why try to productize it when it's clearly not ready?

The second-gen iPhone: 3G, GPS, only slightly thicker {Engadget}

Apr 25th 2008 4:10PM Looking forward to the battery life taking a hit. I would expect a drop of at least 25% unless they are doing some real magic with 3G.

I have a BB and when I am in areas with EVDO coverage, the thing sucks down battery and I can barely go 36 hours (assuming a normal amount of email ~100/day received 2-3 sent, a bit of browsing and about 60 minutes of talk). When I go to areas that have no trace of EVDO (overseas) it lasts for upwards of 3 days, with similar usage. The worst is when you are in the edge of service and it goes between 3G and non-3G - you're lucky to get 12 hours like that.
