Tukaani chopsticks may be just the thing for beginners {Slashfood}

Aug 20th 2008 3:39PM Sigh. This is another one of those flashy pieces of design work that looks so lovely and useable on the blogs, but turns out to be just a concept piece.

My husband didn't start using chopsticks until he was in his 40s. He's still awkward with them, and I thought perhaps a set of these might make a nice gift. However, when I clicked to follow up on Tukaani chopsticks, what did I find? They're made of sterling silver, and each set must be ordered individually from the artist, who lives in Finland.

Slashfood readers don't need table art, we need cutlery. No thanks.

FDA declares all tomato varieties safe to eat {Slashfood}

Jul 17th 2008 10:06PM Here's the current warning about peppers at the FDA site:
Until health officials know that the contaminated product or products are no longer on the market, persons with increased risk of severe infection, including infants, elderly persons, and those with impaired immune systems, should not eat raw jalapeño peppers or raw serrano peppers. They should also only eat raw tomatoes that are on the FDA safe list. Produce grown at home is not part of this warning. Other persons who are concerned and who want to reduce their risk of Salmonella infection can take similar precautions. Consumers should be aware that raw jalapeño peppers are often used in the fresh preparation of salsa, pico de gallo, and other dishes.

Tomatoes are indeed cleared.

See the FDA site here:

It'll get updated as needed.

Now you can add canned bacon to your pantry staples {Slashfood}

May 30th 2008 9:44AM Canned bacon is hardly new. It's been around since at least World War II. The best canned bacon I've ever had is the Danish variety.

What are your foodie limits? {Slashfood}

May 16th 2008 1:28PM I draw the line at durian. It always tastes of rotting garbage to me, which I suspect is a biochemical problem. I lack whichever enzyme allows other people to taste the sweetness that lurks under durian's famously hideous odor.

I also can't stomach sweetbreads. I really don't want to eat anything's pancreas.

That should be "hear, hear", not "here, here", by the way.

Cooking with Trader Joe's, Cookbook of the Day {Slashfood}

Apr 14th 2008 2:28PM Bad code, no biscuit! That link to the cookbook authors' site has an extraneous "%" in it. Please edit it.

Mar 14th 2008 12:13PM Also, you've got the wrong stew there. It should be LAMB stew, not beef.

Tea espresso: all the class without all the caffeine {Slashfood}

Mar 4th 2008 10:14AM I hope this stuff tastes better than most rooibos. I've been trying to like rooibos for thirty years, and it tastes nasty to me. It combines blandness and acridity in an odd combination that's really unappealing to my tastebuds.

Haggis anyone? {Slashfood}

Jan 21st 2008 12:29PM It's spelled "expatriate", not "ex-patriot", and it means someone who's left the country.

Trial, error and poached eggs {Slashfood}

Jan 7th 2008 4:34PM She gives a link to the page where Rob does all the experiments with egg-poaching, including the plastic wrap method. It sounds relatively tidy. I might try it.

New Year's Food Resolutions - Bob's list {Slashfood}

Dec 31st 2007 9:17PM The 8 glasses of water idea is a medical myth. Please see the December issue of the British Medical Journal for an analysis of it:

This has been debunked by various sources for years, but maybe you'll listen to a prestigious medical journal. Sheesh.
