I don't know of a drm-less ebook _store_, but if you like txt or rtf off of the torrents, this'll do that.
It can read pdf (although the 500 didn't do it well), rtf, and txt. lit is a MS proprietary format.
Daring Sony to do this is kinda odd. I mean, it'd definitely shave some off of MS's margins if they did.
In any case, reporting "low backwards compatibility" as "none at all" as you did indicates more than a bit of dishonesty.
You can browse the site and do a count for yourself if you like. The count was 72% with no issues acc. to wiki, but the site is here:

Actually it does. The EE-less PS3 has something like 80% backwards compatibility as opposed to the current 60GB which has 98%.

"I'm in the market for a new phone and money isn't a limitation. I'm also not partial to any particular US carrier, but here are some of the features I'd like to have: WiFi, GPS, good coverage in lots of places, push Gmail (a must!), physical keyboard (a must!), a touchscreen, decent battery life and a relatively slim body. And please, nothing that has a fruit logo on it. No offense to the fruit fans, though. Thanks!"
