Acer prepping a console-style gaming PC based on open standards? {Engadget}

Mar 17th 2008 10:52AM I'll even offer a solution:

If you wanted to add something that might spark a bit of debate in the comments section, how about pointing out that the majority of continuous income in PC gaming comes mostly from WoW and The Sims. Two titles that rely on a steady income structure to help drive the product line. Something, ANYTHING that requires a little thought.

I realize it's Monday, but slam another cup of coffee or something.

Acer prepping a console-style gaming PC based on open standards? {Engadget}

Mar 17th 2008 10:48AM I realize that there isn't a lot of first hand reporting going on here. Really, I do. It's not your main focus. It's to analyze mainstream stories. But at least spare us the recycled hysteria repackaged as observational commentary

Struggling PC gaming market? By the outdated definition that doesn't take into account subscription base games, digital distribution, etc. and only brick and mortar stores? You do realize that the ratings systems are horribly outdated, right?

Well then the communication market must be struggling too, since no one uses anything besides paper mail.

And boy, those movie studios and editing houses must be struggling due to the huge drop off in betamax tapes being mailed across the united states.

Is this 1980's Monday or something?

I swear, sometimes the writers on this site do nothing but regurgitate the exact same putrid fluid they suck from the mass media's teat.

If you don't know the current state of the topic you're discussing, leave it out.

NVIDIA's GeForce 9800 GX2 tested, still not out {Engadget}

Mar 16th 2008 10:56PM From the article:

"NB: Due to the way that Crysis offers which resolutions you can select, some cards may not be tested at 1920 x 1200 and beyond."

That's the explanation for why there are no 1920x1200 results for the 3870X2 on the Crysis page.

What a joke. I'm running a 3870X2 in Vista and play Crysis at 1920x1200 just fine. That's just some epic fail. If you can't figure out how to set 1920x1200 on Crysis with a 3870X2, you have no business reviewing the card.

HP's UMPC 2133 to cost $630 when shipping in April? {Engadget}

Feb 20th 2008 9:05AM wls @ Feb 20th 2008 7:50AM

Thewre is no way this will sell for around $600 even if it doesn't have a cd drive (which seems to be the case)and have a penyrn cpu. Just rumors and dreaming. If this has the new via chipset that would cut costs AND performance but still I expect to see this at more than $800. we shall see

Why not? Penryn's are high yield chips that aren't terribly expensive to produce relative to other chips. And with Intel riding high as it is, selling at a loss isn't out of the question for them.

When you consider that the desktop 3Ghz Penryn can be had for $183, it's not out of the question at all.

Virtuity's Backstopp destroys data if laptop leaves DMZ {Engadget}

Feb 20th 2008 8:58AM Location-based security on mobile systems has been around for years. This isn't too hard to bypass either.

1. Grab laptop
2. Open laptop
3. Yank out hard drive
4. Leave

Y-E DATA announces ExpressCard/34 media reader {Engadget}

Jan 11th 2006 4:28PM How the heck does it "leave users in the dark for now" when it doesn't even ship until February?! No one is using it, so how can anybody be in the dark. If they've already announced express cards, who's to say a company won't announce one supporting a major phone network?

Oh and believe it or not, the laptop has this thing called U-S-B, and there are evdo usb cards. Fail to see how there is "darkness" here.
