Cray Jaguar leaps past IBM Roadrunner as world's fastest supercomputer and pun generator (video) {Engadget}
Nov 16th 2009 10:55AM Wow!
And folks were bitching about copyright infringement against Intel for using "bobcat" as an internal beta naming convention the other day. Worried that the Bobcat Custruction Equipment Company might go after Intel.
And here's Cray using "Jaguar" - watch out Apple might behind you - and IBM using Roadrunner - Warner Bothers behind them ?
NASA turns iPhone into chemical sensor, can an App Store rejection be far away? {Engadget}
Nov 13th 2009 11:51AM @Izzy - until there is significantly more info about it - we actually do not know that it's on a jailbroken iPhone. that is a likely scenario - but it could just as easily have been done on a stock iPhone. It depends on exactly what APIs that Li had to access to develop the hardware/ software combo for the sensor. As Apple did in fact earlier this year open up device support for the iPhone Dev community.
I don't see this as becoming a product for the mass consumer anytime in the near future - at least from NASA. Maybe someone might do a lesser ripped off concept of it and then dump that into the App Store.

Nov 13th 2009 11:45AM It will be interesting to see Apple reject the US Federal Gov't.
Also - something tells me that there may be some inside collaboration at work.
Also - the addon detecting trace amounts of chemicals - imagine your iPhone blaring at you that there is a Carbon-Monoxide leak in your house. It's an odorless - invisible gas byproduct [waste] and is deadly.
Your phone screams at you - you look at the screen - it says "CO detected - get the hell out NOW!"
You call OSHA - they come and inspect your house in HAZMAT suits - find the CO leak - fix it and you continue on with your life - because you can.
Instead of dying.
Also -
- portable smoke detector
- portable barbeque detector [find a barbeque to crash in a 1/2 mile radius]
- portable baby-poop detector
- portable teen smoking cigarette/ ganja -- drinking alcohol detector
- portable breathalizer
- other chemical spill/ HAZMAT uses
I'm okay with this. Don't care about the opened/ closed platform arguement.
Intel shells out $1.25 billion to settle all AMD litigation {Engadget}
Nov 12th 2009 11:03AM The construction company 'naming' you speak of is irrelevant. They also have names in there like 'Tigris' - put that with 'bobcat' and you have them using a scheme similar to Apple. Add in 'danube' - 'sabine' and 'nile' and the the 'bulldozer' term is out of context.
You're reading way too much into it. And even if they did market the term 'bobcat' - the contruction vehicle manufacturer has no case as they do not build micro-computer processor and are not in the same industry.
@Whitecollarcriminal - you're right about one thing - I do remeber never seeing any AMD advertising - TV or otherwise. And the Intel jingle is getting as annoying as Geico's adertising is.

Nov 10th 2009 10:19AM @THEHAWKs -
It's usually a good idea to buy the RAM 3rd party when purchasing a Mac from Apple - along with extra HD space - as it is cheaper 99% of the time than adding it to the order thru Apple.
But then you already knew this before bashing folks this morning - huh?

Nov 3rd 2009 1:27PM Same here. Jailbreaking my iPhone allowed me to add additional functionality that Apple/ ATT do not implement. Which in turn does not hinder the main abilities of the phone. For example - I have an App that allow for Menu Bar style Alerts that show up at the top of my phone for new eMail - new Calls - new Messages and so on. I have the Date added up there so I don't have to back out to the lock screen or pull up the Calendar to see it.
I have also customized the look of the interface in places as I get bored with the visuals from time to time.
I've been modding the system of my desktops for years and I never had to 'jailbreak' them in order to do it - simply had to know where the files were and how to modify them. the same thing applies to the iPhone - since Apple is touting it as basically a handheld running a desktop system - I should be able to modify my own phone how I see fit.
I did this with my RAZR when it was the hot thing.
But yeah - jailbreaking does not mean simply running illegal software.

Updates to the iPhone Software - YES - but you will relock your phone and have to 'jailbreak' again.
Updates to various installed Apps - YES - no harm.
