This machine will play 1080p content just fine since it has 4500MHD video. You just need to play the file using software that does hardware acceleration (Media Player Classic - Home Cinema or better yet, KMPlayer w PowerDVD 8 codecs).

My HP 2730p has a faster LV CPU (1.86Ghz and 6MB L2 cache), but w 4500MHD and KMPlayer, my CPU load during 1080p playback is only around 30% and it's butter smooth.
Engadget should just stick to reporting the facts. Op-Ed is really not their strong suit.
3MOS = 3 CMOS sensors?
Why the hell would you be surprised that it does well in benchmarks? It's a Turion, not Geode.
$500 is bargain compared to the $600+ that they are charging for GTX280.
That 8W TDP is with CPU plus the Northbridge and RAM. You can't compare that to Silverthorne's 2W for CPU only, especially when their Northbridge is still made with 65nm process.
It's like Samsung Q1 Ultra, but with Wings™ for that clean, fresh protection!
800MHz Atom? Why don't I just hand someone $750 to stab me in the crotch instead.

No it can't. It's slow as a 900MHz Dothan Celeron for decoding work. It can't do smooth playback of 720p videos either with any of the more aggressive codecs. I'm not even sure how decent of a 480p media player this thing will be.

This is one of the most ridiculous product ideas I have seen in a long time. Whoever thought up this POS needs to go market pet foods or something.
Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I'm heading to university next year, and I've purchased a MacBook. I'm also taking my four year old desktop, just in case I'm left with no computers when the MacBook is being repaired or whatnot. With only two USB ports on a MacBook, I want a Bluetooth mouse. Budget is about $100, and of course, it needs OS X support. Thanks for the help!"
